Root this is how to get MSL code

To get your MSL code from VM and possibly other carriers.

You call Customer Service and explain that it keeps asking for a service code in order to finish activation (which isn't true, but necessary for getting code). To keep self-service from running, do the following:
  • Boot phone
  • Turn off data
  • And wait - the key to getting the MSL
They will run through all the BS with you (rebooting, ##72786#, tech support, etc.). KEEP EXPLAINING IT ASKS FOR YOUR SERVICE CODE. Eventually (after 20 min) they will give you a 6 digit code [that is your MSL].
When you receive the code, simply turn data back on. Self-service will run and your done.

***remember to keep data turned off until you get the code***

A few important questions

What is MSL code?

An MSL is a 6-digit code unique to your CDMA device that's necessary to access some of your handset's deeper functions, such as wiping a phone number or manually programming in a new one.

Will this unlock my device?

No

There are so many different things that can be changed. This is safe right?

Yes and No. You can render your device useless, soft bricking it. DO NOT haphazardly change settings unless you specifically know what your doing. Always make a backup/screenshot of the settings so you can revert them in case of errors/issues.

Should I share this code?

Not the wisest decision. Anybody would be able to change settings on your phone. They could even wipe the phone. Of course there other nefarious things that also can be done. Use the same discretion you would with any other important/private information.

There are other ways to ask
for your MSL code. This is just
1 way. This works great with
Customer Service reps that
are being difficult.

I have performed this numerous times with the same device to verify that it works for getting your MSL code regardless of previous hands free activations. It just takes patience to get the code from them

On Boost, I had called them about another matter. It happened to be around when zv5 was released so I just casually mentioned that I had some update asking for a service code and they just gave it to me. :)

Really?!?! They made that easy.
I'm guessing the reason they do that is to cut down on people needing their help since now everyone can set up their phones themselves. Also I don't think they are worried about tethering since many of their free plans had or have tethering included free.

VM does NOT offer free tethering, as well as some other carriers. The only way they would give me the MSL code was by doing what I stated in the OP. Most of the customer service have no clue whatsoever about what your asking for. Every time I've asked, I ended up having to talk with tech support (the tech support from Mexico is awesome, meanwhile the Filipino tech doesn't want to help nor give you the code).

He was talking about RingPlus :p

My most important email account has been unusable being that i have a 2 step verification setup with a phone number that is no longer active and it is not active with anyone on any carrier right now, I am wondering since HasH_BrowN posted that you can manually program in a new one, i'm pretty sure in regards to that being a phone number. . that I could somehow program in the number that My 2 step verification is needed to be sent to in order to get that code and sign in and recover my account and get back my 2 year dead account that is ridiculously overdue in me being able to get it back, MY FIRST CHILD'S BIRTH AND 1000's of PICTURES and videos or memories are on my Storage linked to this account, so please if anyone has any method on receiving a text to a number and the number being able to be edited to the specific one I need it to be , please HELP thank you have a great night everyone reading this! =)

I'm pretty sure it won't work unless you actually have service for that number. Good luck

Another quick way (boost) is ask a random question then, near the end, ask for the MSL code.

Just trying to clarif is this :
TRIED AND TRUE ?
Because that is a pretty obvious way of doing it and going about getting the code but its sort of out of place even posting that maybe because the way HasH_BrowN wrote about is the clear cut method if you follow his steps then there's nothing really that you would be worrying about with no answer if they happen to ask you what you're talking about but all I'm saying is that if somebody tries to. Obtain the code your way then they might run into a lot of problems with not even knowing what they're talking about because they've just asked the question and not have any answers to the representatives response so anyways I know is not necessarily needed the knowledge of why and what the reason your asking for the code but it just is kind of an obvious way to go about it .

No doubt.. I think that's good I'm just saying so super non responsive people would just skip HasH_BrowN's method and go with yours but either way I don't find this topic very big deal in regards to saying something about your post in a Smart A$$ manner so my bad if It came off that way I just wanted to keep everyone on a genuinely informed method on obtaining the MSL code .
