Before we go there, let me say that I love my Hero and I've accepted a long time ago that Technology is far from perfect. if it was perfect, we'd never strive to move further...etc.

With my Hero, I've noticed one thing that I have to put out there.
What good is a really good phone if you have to turn apps off, not run GPS, Not run WIFI, can't browse too much...etc? Or better yet, What GOOD IS A 'GOOD' PHONE IF YOU HAVE TO USE IT LIKE A BASIC PHONE?Mind you, I'm not being negative, I'm really curious as to the feelings of others here at the forums when it comes to this question.

I'd love to fully customize my Hero, when I attempt to, I think its good but then I find an APP or a setting that is what I want, makes the phone have lower performance, from Lag to poor power retainment.

Reading posts and discussions about the Hero just makes me wonder what it would be like to have minimal issues, really dig deep into the Hero and use it to the fullest. Imagine that!!

Its really not that bad dude. I have the 100% awake issue, but leave GPS, WIFI, and Bluetooth always active. Today I made a good amount of calls, checked emails, browsed web and was able to make it from 9:30am till around 11pm when it started saying it was low on battery.

Keep in mind this is basically my work phone now and I still have plenty of fun with it too every day. I really get no lag...just the battery COULD be better. I just ordered 2 more batteries from ebay though that I will keep charged just in case. Might suck to have to order more batteries and pay a bit more for the phone, but I know once I get the batteries I really will have NO worries about this phone at all.

No issues either, its just deciding what you want from the unit... some are unreasonable expecting the unit to be on doing everything AND lasting forever... every phone has issues bar none. I get decent performance from phone... programs n battery and I'm satisfied. I could expand on this but its not necessary, its a great phone and will only get better with age, lol...

I'm with the above two posters. I honestly don't have any real issues at all. Everything I've come across, I've fixed, not worked around, but fixed.

I think my phone may not be sleeping and remains awake 100% of the time (as it's been at about 32% for the last few days now, indicating that at some point, something is keeping it up), however, I could really care less. I take it off the charger at 7:30 am every morning and usually don't need to plug it in before I call it a night at 10 or 10:30 every night. GPS and WIFI are both on at all times, Twitter, Facebook, Weather and 2 email accounts update continuously.

I have found, oddly enough, that the longer I've had the phone on, the smoother it gets.

The only REAL issue I was having was with the native mail application. It was taking FOREVER to open and render emails. I cleared out the entire thing in the Manage Application setting (which, incidentally was 36MB....not really sure why), re-entered everything in, and now it opens almost instantly.

I truly hope it ends up working out for you and I do believe it will get better.

BTW, I am running all stock stuff, I have not rooted.

I keep everything on except Bluetooth. My day starts at about 7:30 am and ends around 4:30 pm. This is my business/only phone I use. I am in the IT business and spend an average of 15-20 minutes an hour on the phone. My charge is lasting all day till I get home. I plug it in during dinner and I am good to go for the evening. I occasionally use the turn-by-turn navigation to get to residential locations or areas out of my town. I have the phone plugged in (car adapter) during this time. I have spent a lot of time doing demos of the phone for people as well. I am just not having the charge issues that I see posted here. My email checks once an hour or when I manually refresh it. I think this helps. My awake time is all over the place. 5% to 60%. I spend a lot of time working in office locations. I have got into the habit of stealing a charge off of BlackBerry usb cables which are at some peoples desk as I work on their computers for 10 or 15 minutes at a time. On an unrelated note, I have been confronted many times by iphone users about iphone verses Android in these office locations. It seems like there is always 1 employee who is a iphone fanatic. Instead of going into long winded drawn out examples I just log onto vuivision.com and then say, "lets see how all the network television quality compares on the 2 phones." That usually leaves them with thier mouth hanging open and makes any onlookers laugh and start checking out the Hero more closely. Enjoying my Hero. I guess that makes me a Hero fanatic.

Its a compromise... The phone manufacturers could make a phone you describe but the battery would be SOO large, the phone size would double and then people would be complaining that it is too large. The manufacturers do the best they can with what peoples expectations are. Size, functions and weight. When you factor all three in and try to put it into a form factor that people will buy - you get what is currently available.

I use my Wi-Fi and GPS all the time. I leave my mobile network on always. I do not find it difficult to hit the toggle for on off on a home screen to begin using a feature. It takes an extra 1-2 seconds. For my effort and extreme wait time in toggling things I get an extra 4-12 hours battery. Battery management is going to get bit with Eclair as well. Just look at the moto droid with 100mA less battery cell. You can full bright the screen and cycle a play list for 7 hours.

I have fully customized my phone to an extreme satisfaction level and do not consider my phone use at all basic.

Find me a phone, that has all the widgets, apps, features, hardware that even compares and you'll find a phone with poor battery life as well.

Look at it this way...

When you drive your car, do you leave the cruise control, rear window defroster, and headlights on all the time, just in case you need them? Personally, I turn off the features I'm not using until I need them. HTC includes some nice toggle widgets for GPS, Bluetooth, and WiFi.

I can do all of things you listed without any issue at all. How many things are you running at one time?

I am not exactly sure what people expect out of a mini-computer/phone that fits in the palm of your hand. Are you disappointed that your car does not fly and go faster than the speed of sound?
