thl 4000 (GC5004) review (and stuff)

Over the last week I've got my hands on a new thl 4000 (MTK 6582M) phone. This phone has flaws, but it's price, general performance and battery life make up for those. Cheap at ~$145 AU.

This phone packs a specified 4000mAh Li-ion.
Just played Fast & Furious: Legacy for 10 minutes and it dropped 3 or 4%, but that doesn't mean squat really. What about standby and everyday normal use? Well, one can expect a full day of installing apps, playing an hour of game and still have plenty of juice. Around 8 hours of screen-on time can be expected OR at least 4 hours of 3D gaming. One can expect around 24 hours standby with that usage too. I've yet to fully define its battery life capability as I'm still playing around with it too much to find out what sort of 'normal' everyday use would be. It is easily lasting me a full 12 hour day (while messing with it) with plenty left in the tank when I charge it over night. Charging from 0% takes around 5 hours.

Storage:
8GB ROM;
System: 900MB,
Cache: 126MB,
Data (apps): 2GB,
SD card (internal): 4.2GB,
Swap: 511MB
SD Card slot up to 32GB

This is a rundown of positives and negatives of the thl 4000;
Negative:
* Standard battery statistics found in settings doesn't have a graph and usage time cannot be found (use GSam Battery Monitor instead)
* GPS is a bit flaky but does work... just not so great with apps that use geolocation (network location)
* No magnetometer sensor... No Compass :(
* Camera isn't the best. Rather blurry with motion. Also the LED flash isn't very bright. For a still photo, it works fine though.
Positive:
* Great battery life. Especially if you don't Google Now cards, turn on location to battery saving, install Xposed and the app Amplify.
* Runs rings around iPhone battery life :P
* Great gaming performance
* KitKat OS runs pretty fine
* Kingo Root rootable

While I could go on and give details on how I rooted, what apps I use etc. I won't unless someone asks.
Hope my quick review here is useful to someone.

Location Fix

1. Install F-Droid
2. Download and install "µg UnifiedNlp for GAPPS-free devices" using F-Droid

If you try Viper4Android and get drive install problems:
Installing the zip from (http://khcitymobile.blogspot.com.au/2015/02/app50x44xflashable-viper4android-v2340.html) worked for me.

Much larger user Data partition for your apps:

!!! Backup any files from your phone before continuing !!!
1. Register the forum at http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=644867
* Google Translate. * The captcha is example 76+24 = code. Don't worry about onscreen keyboards. The captcha would be 100 in that example.
2. Find and download Biecpi's Increased memory for application "3) System 900MB, Data 2900MB- 0.9S.2.9D.rar (1.29 KB)"
3. Backup your NVRAM with MTK Droid Root Tools. You MUST BACKUP NVRAM! If you don't, you'll lose the ability to make calls. Don't lose this backup!!!
4. Download SP Flashtool from http://www.needrom.com/download/tutorial-mt65xx-flashing/ and extract it to a handy location
5. Download the MTK Driver Auto Installer from http://chinagadgetsreviews.blogspot.com.au/2014/04/download-mediatek-smartphone-driver.html
6. Download your latest firmware from
http://www.needrom.com/download/thl-4000/ and extract that to a folder within SP Flashtool
7. Extract Biecpi's file (downloaded at step 2) overwriting all four firmware files you extracted in step 6.
8. Put a custom recovery.zip overwriting the official firmware version. Example: TWRP2 2.8.5.0 at http://www.needrom.com/download/twrp-2-8-1-0-4/
8. Power off phone and remove battery
9. Open SP Flashtool, load the scatter from that folder where the firmware is, select Format All + Download. Click the green down arrow 'Download'
10. Plug phone
* If it fails. Make sure 'DA DL All with Checksum" is deselects. Also 'High Speed' and 'auto detect' should be enabled.
11. Phone will be flashed once green tick is show.
12. Reboot to your custom recovery and connect with MTK Droid Root Tools to reinstate your NVRAM you did backup in step 3.
13. Use Stock or wipe and install a custom ROM.
