Those little numbers by icons

I'm pretty sure they have something to do with messages. How do I find the messages? How do I get rid of the numbers?

Those numbers by or on icons usually indicate the number of notifications that particular notification has. Opening that notification by tapping it will open whatever it is so you can deal with the notifications.

I tried tapping one app, which opened it but did not reveal any notifications to my knowledge. Where could they be hiding? Will they disappear if I locate and read them?

where do you see these? on the homescreen? aand yes they usually indicate a notification. they can also indicate a new message, or something important. which apps do you see these with?

Files and browser have them. The problem is when I open them I don't see any messages and the numbers are still there when I close them. How do I find these mysterious messages?

are you using a custom launcher? if so which one? if not, what phone do you have?

and that is odd for a browser to do this. which one are you using? have you looked into the browser's settings? and files? are they downloaded files?

can you post a screenshot of this?

Yes, it probably is a little unusual. The browser is called Lightning, lightweight and at least fairly private. At least some of the files are downloaded, and the phone is a Samsung Galaxy A02s. I probably should have thought of checking settings. I guess I'll do that.
