those tracking apps

I was thinking about installing one of those tracking apps, well just in case my phone gets stolen, or i lose it.

if someone steals my phone, discards my sim card, and installs theirs, will i still be able to track it or no?

thanks for any help!

it seems awesome but my main concern is will my phone still be able to be tracked if they switch out sims.

MyLookOut. There's a free version and a paid version. The free version already offers virus and malware protection, Phone finder, live tracking on Google Maps, and backup to the cloud.

Here it is in action, IRL. That's what sold me.

It'll all be over before 'they' even have a chance to switch SIM cards.

but lets say they do get to switch sims, will it still work?

The proof of the pudding is in the eating, of course. So why don't you test it for yourself IRL? It's free after all. Install it and register, then switch SIM cards with your mate and see if you can still track it on Google Maps. There's no better way than to convince yourself.

Switching SIM's shouldn't matter unless the new SIM doesn't have data. You need to be more concerned about your device getting wiped.
So if the guy did a factory restore (wipe out the memory with factory default apps/setup, the tracking apps will be wiped out too? Or this apps is smart and keep hidden even with factory restore?

These kinds of apps need root so that a factory reset won't be able to delete them.

Thanks chanchan05 for your comment. Someone told me that once a factore restore is done, the tracking apps will be wiped out, so which answer is correct? When you said need to root, do you mean install as system apps and not as normal user?

Thanks for your comment

Depends on what app you install, but Cerberus and Avast has an option in their settings that activates a factory wipe lock feature, making the app immune to factory wipes. I guess that means it moves itself into a system app category installation so the wipe won't work.

Thanks chanchan05, now it's clear.

You will be able to track back depending on what type of tracking app you are using.
Some app only allow to track if your phone is near you. Some allow to track only if the internet is active on the phone.

Does anyone know what happens if someone changes the Google account associated with a phone? Will it remove apps installed by the previous user, even ones that might have a 'system app' status?
