Root Three button combo

I may very soon be going down the dark and murky 'root road' due to some issues with my Froyo 2.2 version.
(Plus I need to backup my system, and the only way appears to be with the use of a root app).

Right now when I try the "enter download mode or recovery mode using the buttons combo" I don't get anywhere.

I understand it is important to get this working before attempting a root.

Can someone please explain in detail how to press these keys so I can check if mine works or not?

It's almost impossible to press all three simultaneously so I assume there is an order you should be pressing them in?
What is that order?

OK, got it working.
I did some more reading and discovered that the three buttons must be held down after a complete *power down*.

Beware that titanium backup doesn't actually backup system apps - it only backs up the data. If you want to back them up you will need to copy the apk and odex files from the system/app folder instead.

BTW, do you know where Skype hides itself?
It seems it's the only app that doesn't want to be seen in system/app.

Most non system apps can be found in data/app.
