Time for a new phone.

I have had a Galaxy Prevail for the past 2 years and it has served me beautifully. But I don't know if like the CPU and RAM have degraded physically or if all software inexplicably becomes more bloated and inefficient as time progresses but lately it's been pissing me off a lot. Constant lagging and constant "______ is not responding!" messages.

So!

What phone would you recommend that is:

1) Thoroughly "hackable". That is, there exist custom ROMs for it that are exceedingly verstatile

2) Has bluetooth (which I think every single phone on the planet does but)

3) outstanding battery life (both with everything (wifi, sync, gps, etc.) turned on or phenomenal life with everything turned off)

4) I suppose this mostly depends on the ROM but anything that can support a wiimote properly is almost required.

5) Has its own GPU if possible. failing that, multi-core CPU.

6) Decent-sized screen.

Or just ignore all of these and throw out your candidates and I'll research it myself.

EDIT: Oh right and it absolutely MUST NOT be a contract phone. Unless I can use it on non-contract carriers. Also GSM. Which I think is the one that works globally right? yeah that.

obvious choice (still) N4.
Less obvious choice, Star or HaiPai's 'S3/S4 like' phones
Or, for a few dollars more - HTC One .

The Nexus 4 has no SD card slot. What kind of apple-esque nincompoopery is this?!
Google's policy for a couple of years now. I understand their arguments, but don't buy them (though you'll note I'm using a phone without an SD slot - it was a factor for me, but only a factor rather than a deal-breaker).

Plenty of mid-range phones with SD slots still, but becoming less common at the high end (Samsung and Sony still do). Of course you can't move apps to SD any more, so you need to think about your requirements: modest app usage and a lot of media, a phone with an SD slot and modest internal storage should be fine. Like to keep a lot of modern games (large apps) on the phone and you should pay attention to the internal storage and not rely on SD to solve things for you.

BTW, can you still find a N4? They are out of stock in the Play Store in the UK, and I believe also in the US (though some other resellers will surely still have them). We're expecting the N5 very soon, so my guess is that the N4 won't be back in the Play Store.

A microSD card slot wasn't one of your prerequisites. You might want to add it as 7) ;)

The Galaxy Note II might fit the bill. It's got a large, bright display and, thanks to a larger-than-usual battery, pretty decent stamina.

you could take a look at the Samsung S3/S4. they have solid battery life removable battery/SD cards and 4.8-5" screens. pretty much all the non contract/prepaid carriers offer them as well. Both have massive dev communities so "hackability" shouldnt be an issue. they both have quad core CPUs and fairly high end GPUs.

not sure about wiimote, would have to do some research on that yourself =p

slightly offtopic, but not really:

does anyone know of an app for wiimote connection in 4.2+? i use WiiMote Controller, but 4.2 did something to bluetooth, and the dev's can't seem to get it fixed.
