Hello S II, welcome to the forums.
There are a lot of reasons Android Market can seem less than reliable, but two main ones: Either the Market servers are loaded with traffic at the time a user is wanting in, or the device being used needs a fresh power down and power back up to clear things a bit on the user's end.
I had that very thing happen last night: Market was loading fine on my Galaxy Tab, but showing that error message that you saw, on my X2. A reboot of the X2 brought Market around on the next try.
