Sure they did. Prior to the iPhone, what was there as far as smart phones go? Blackberry, WinMo and Palm were about it. Apple may not have invented pinch to zoom, finger gestures/swipes and all the others things the iPhone has, but they sure as hell created a MARKET for it and a billion copy cat phones. Correct me if I am wrong, but there was also nothing like the app store going on in 06 either....

Same thing with the iPod. There were MP3 players on the market a bit before it, but who the hell ever bought one? Pretty much no one. Apple releases the iPod, it becomes a huge success and all the sudden guess what? Another billion copy cat MP3 players and a MARKET for them.

Creating a market does not mean they invented something new. It simply means that they took something that already existed and made improvements to it and packaged and presented it in a way that appealed to many millions of people. Those people in turn bought the products, thus creating a market for that item and creating opportunities for competitors to release their products as well and try to grab some of that share.

I gotta agree on Apple creating markets. Apple may not have invented and may have even stolen ideas for their products. But what they did do, was create markets for them. iPod and iPhone being the major ones. I never heard of an MP3 player until I got my iPod a few years back. And they put smartphones on the map too. Whether Apple makes superior products is debateable, but it is quite obvious they know how to market said products.

They were all emerging markets anyway. The future is the future lol. I don't know how else to put it.

@mbell75
so if apple can take what's been out and make an impact from it why can't others get their fair share of recognition for a product just as good or better.and yes they have the app store but apps been around.

No idea, not my line of work. I bet a TON of companies are asking themselves that for years though.

The iPad sold a lot on it's first day simply because every one who want's one want's one on day one. In 6 months, I bet they'll be lucky to get at least 50% of their first day sales. It's always been like that. Same goes with the xbox and ps3 when they came out. Apple followers will always be followers in my opinion. A few would be brave enough to try out other avenues, but most will be lemmings... :)

Tablets are an emerging market too. If I had to put my money on it, I would say it will be years if ever, that any company will sell as many as the iPad.

I personally don't like Apple and the only product of thiers that I ever bought was a used 4gb iPod 5 years ago, but you can't deny that they know how to market. They have and will continue to sell millions of products whether you like them or not. I doubt any Android tablet will come close, unless Google decides to blast the airwaves like Apple does.

I wouldn't even give it to apples marketing dept. The original ipod adds were annoying at best. I'm willing to be some unrelated celebrity endorsement made ipod popular and the trend thing.

Yea, you are right. Some celebrity is responsible for the iPod selling well over 250 million units. Has nothing to do with it being a great product from a great company

Celebrities have sold more of worse. Paris hilton crap comes to mind. And there were better products out at the time, so product quality is a moot point.

Wow. If you can't even give them credit for knowing how to sell a product, I don't think I can take anything you say seriously. Sorry dude, but you lost me with that one. You're worse than mbell, he atleast bought the competitions product, even if he does constantly whine about it.

Did you really think the ipod silohette ads were good? I'm really surprised the walkman name didn't take mp3 players by storm to be honest. Maybe I'm over critqueing as I do come from a semi marketing background. My point is, why would you think the original ipod ads stood out in any way shape or from over other ads? I don't think they did. Somehow they became a trendy thing, and that's what launched that product. Those dancing shadows didn't portray trendy in any way shape or form.

No

Me too.

Yes, you are ;)

They did to someone.

Apple's marketing has been effective - but by being dishonest. They have had their wrists slapped by the Advertising Standards Authority (in the UK) more than once for being economical with the truth (or just plain lying) in their TV advertising.

I honestly don't remember the ads. All I know is that it's a household name. I don't know how they did it, but Apple made it so most everyone knows what an iPod is. Go ask people what a Zune or any other brand mp3 player is, I'm sure you'll get many confused looks.

Everyone I know, knows what a zune is. Pretty sure walkman is still a household name too. But why credit apple when we don't know what really set it off? Sure wasn't those ads....

After looking into the matter a little, it appears apple even stole parts of the ipod ui from creative. Interestimg

Really? You have super cool friends then I guess. Most people I know havent a clue what it is and none of our friends bought one apparently LOL. From last year...

Microsoft has been keeping awfully quiet about sales figures for its Zune, a product that many Windows Enthusiasts originally predicted would cause considerable grief for Apple’s iPod. However, despite a new model refresh last fall and plenty of advertising, Microsoft has been left to announce that its actual sales are still a joke.

According to an Associated Press article citing Jason Reindorp, Zune’s director of product marketing, the device has sold “just north of two million” between its debut in November 2006 and May 2008. Apple has sold roughly 76 million iPods during that same period, more than doubling the installed base of iPods since the Zune’s debut.

You can pretty much expect the same from a Windows based tablet trying to go after the iPad I am sure. Oh well, they tried haha.

I have an iPod and a Zune, most people that I know, know what the Zune is as well as the iPod. Perhaps it is because I have friends who are not sheep, I do not know. Keep trying, though.
