Titanium Backup to Box problems

JimSmith94

This used to work but for the last several months I keep getting the message "failed to obtain Box access" when I try to login, before I even get to the login prompt. When I try to the automatic backup to Box after a local backup, I get something like "Box credentials haven't been established yet".

The Box folks have been very helpful, but say they use an open API so the problem must be with Titanium Backup. Both they and I have contacted Titanium but neither of us have received anything other than an automated acknowledgement of the message.

Does anyone else have this problem and have you found a solution?

Dumb question - have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling TiBu and the license file? Try an uninstall then reboot and reinstall. If that doesn't work, try uninstall, reboot, clear cache, reinstall.

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I can try the uninstall/reinstall but syncs to DropBox and Google Drive work, at least until they hit their file size limits. Thus the reason I like to use Box.

The odd thing is that this used to work until all of a sudden it didn't. I haven't been able to log in or sync since.

Well, I'd give it a shot. It'll only take you about 10 minutes or so and might actually work. If it doesn't, you may have to look for a better way to get a hold of the developer for TiBu.

I uninstalled TiBu, rebooted to recovery, wiped Dalvik and cache, rebooted, installed TiBu again, and still no go.

My backup settings and configuration were remembered though, so it seems that the uninstall wasn't complete. Does anyone know where those settings are stored?

As for contacting the developers, if neither I nor the Box support team can get them to respond, what else can I do? It's weird that I can access and use Box from both my phone and PC, just can't get access through TiBu.

Is there another online solution that will accept a 1GB+ TiBu backup file without puking?

Titanium Backup should store it's settings on your sdcard in the same folder with any backups you may have already made.

By default the folder should be called TitaniumBackup, remember that if you delete it all your backups go with it.

Recently I changed ISP's and had to change my primary email address, and Box was one of the many services I had to change.

Once I changed my Box account login I had to update TB, If I recall all I had to do was uncheck "Enable Box" in preferences. Shut down and restart, then enable Box again.

Manually trigger a sync to Box and it should prompt you for the login info again.

Oh and to touch on other providers of free cloud storage, there are no other providers of cloud storage that is built into TB other than Drop, Box, and Drive.

I thought Drive recently merged storage space across all of the google products like Docs, Picasa, and gmail to give each user 15gigs and they have a very high file size limit. Another option is to get a 5gb SugarSync account for free, have TB backup everything to it's given folder, then have the SugarSync app only monitor the TB folder.

The SugarSync app is rather comprehensive and easy to use, when it see's changes to the TB folder it should automatically backup the changes with configurable options like only doing so on wifi and plugged in for example.

SugarSync has no individual file size limits as well.

So that brings me to my next question..

Why is your backup with TB so freaking huge at a gig, and why are you hitting any kind of file size limit on cloud providers.. Are you maxed out or is it a individual file giving you problems?

There is certainly ways you can fine tune TB's settings to reduce the number of actual backups (TB can keep 2,3,4 or more of the same file and probably not needed), or make sure TB is compressing them more (default compression is for speed and not size), or make sure TB is only backing up things you actually need like user apps and related data while ignoring system files you never need in a backup to begin with.

Why are you a backup junky?

Thanks again for your quick replies. I unchecked Box, rebooted, checked it again, and still the same. When I click Run in Schedules, it takes me to the Login to Box screen. When I click that I get "Unable to obtain Box access" and never get to an actual login or allow access screen. I checked my existing files on Box and this had worked fine on two different phones from March, 2012 through the middle of July, 2013. I have never been able to access Box through TB since.

I have TB set to the default of two backups and normal compression, which was never a problem before. Box is the only one I have ever been able to successfully sync with. DropBox usually craps out at around 100MB and Google Drive quits at about the same place except with a network error. My automatic backups run overnight while plugged in and on my home Wifi, which hasn't changed either.

Does Sync to Box from TB work for anyone?

I just tried DropBox again. It uploaded a few MB of 2.66 GB and died with an internal error on Flipboard.apk. Uploading to Google Drive now and so far it says 150 MB of 2.94 GB, but at least it's still running.

Odd really.

I use Box only, I got in when Box was offering 50gigs for free space and my Nexus 7 is set to redo backups of any changed data of my apps I flagged as "game data" or "backup" every day at 2pm. It always syncs to my Box account with no issues.

Looking over my TitaniumBackup folder on my Nexus 7 "sdcard" , try this -

Uninstall Titanium.

Using a PC connection or android file manager, rename the TitaniumBackup folder to something else... TB or similar.

Re-install TB, it should create a new TitaniumBackup folder, and enable box right away. See if you can log in/sync.

Hypothetically if you are running the latest version of Titanium it will scan the box folder and start downloading everything from your box account BUT cancel it if you can.

Delete anything with com.keramidas in the TB folder you renamed, delete the newly created TB folder, rename your old TB folder back to TitaniumBackup or whatever TB wants it to be named.

Launch TB again, go into "menu" and click "reload application".

Hope it works.

Oh and you really need to start assigning labels to just the apps you need to backup like games and things you download.

Once you assign a label to the things you really need backed up just adjust the scheduler to redo and sync the same labeled apps and save a ton of free cloud storage space.

I found and renamed two folders:
/data/data/com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup/
/mnt/extSdCard/data/com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup/
The one on my external card seems to be the one that holds the settings. After an uninstall, rename, and reinstall of TB all of my settings were finally blank.

I enabled Box, clicked the Run and Login boxes and again still get the "Unable to obtain Box access" message. If I can't even access Box with a supposedly completely clean install of TB, I don't know what else to try. I too have 50GB plus a free 5GB from Sprint that I would sure like to use for backups.

BTW, my sync attempt to Google Drive last night quit at 350MB with an unknown network error.

Are you by chance running any kind of firewall, ad block or other app that modifies the device hosts file?

Aside from that I am stumped at this point..time to hit up Titanium support via email.

I'd appreciate if you kept the community updated if you do contact them, I am really curious what the issue is and any updates towards solution will help someone in the future.

Well son of a gun, you nailed it! Adfree was/is the culprit. I reverted back to the stock hosts file in Adfree and I was able to log in and sync to Box! Then I loaded the Adfree hosts file again and Box login failed.

Now, do you have any idea how to fix it? I copied /system/etc/hosts to my PC but didn't find any entry for box.com. Plenty for hitbox.com but not box.com itself.

Googling for Titanium Backup and Adfree just found entries for an adfree version of TB. I have emailed TB support twice and so has Box support with no answer at all. I'll email Box again with the new details and see if they can help.

In the meantime, any suggestions for another ad blocking program to use? AdBlock Plus quit working for me quite a while ago, but I'm trying it again. At least it let me login to Box.

What version of adfree?

Head on over to the adfree website and download the latest version, uninstall the old and give it a try.

I am running the latest version right from the tin can and I don't have any issues with TB on my Nexus 7.

Aside from that I'm glad the issue has been identified!

I had version 0.8.64, uninstalled and installed the version from their website, still 0.8.64 and still the failed login to Box. Guess I'll stick with AdBlock Plus until/unless you or Box has a solution. Thanks again for all of your help.

Thanks to WoohooGuy for helping me find that Adfree is the culprit. Is anyone else having this problem or found a fix? AdBlock Plus allows Box access but it isn't blocking hardly any ads, so I'd really like to get Adfree working for me again.

Even better would be a way to contact the developer(s) at AdFree Main Menu.

Have you tried toggling the symlink option in AdFree?

I uninstalled AdBlock Plus, reinstalled Adfree and the symlink option was disabled. Tried to login to Box from TB, no luck. Enabled symlink and still no luck.

Would you mind sharing your setup steps and/or screenshots? If it's working for everyone else, there must be a way to make this work for me.

Well, somewhere between force stopping, clearing data, uninstalling and installing, my hosts file is apparently messed up now. I can connect to Box with neither blocker running, but with either one enabled I get "Login failed". :(

Using adaway here and have no problems backing up titanium to box.

I tried AdAway and with it, any Internet connection I try says unable to connect to the proxy server. I have uninstalled it, have no ad blockers installed at all, and still can't connect to anything online. I was able to update my profile but that didn't help either.

Before I restore my last TWRP backup and start from scratch, any ideas or step-by-step to at least get this back to where I was?

For some reason I had to forget my home Wifi connection and re-enter my credentials to get Internet connectivity back. Once I got that working, I installed AdAway and it seems to be working so far. Thanks for all the help guys.
