TMoNews: Father's Day "Free Phone" Promotion likely

It sucks that this is before the GSIII release, but I'm just thinking that I'll just buy the phone I can get the most for (One S?) and buy a GSIII later online.

One Question. Has anyone tried canceling this once the rebate goes through and switching to the $30 pre-paid? I think it would work as long as T-Mobile allowed me to do it.

Well, I'm the only one posting here so far.

Anyway, I happened to check out the T-Mobile website and they were having a midnight sale on the One S to make it free after a $100 mail in rebate (likely much lower than the rebate to be used for the Father's Day Promotion). Plus, I can get it sold before the inventory increase brings the price down online. :)

Once the rebate is sent in, they will no longer allow you to cancel, or switch the phone.

Can you explain this or maybe provide a link to something backing this up. Isn't that the entire point of an ETF?

Also, you can switch to and from any phone you want on GSM. That's how a sim card works. They shouldn't have any control over this.

The only problem I can see is that I might have some issues moving from T-Mobile Contract to T-Mobile Pre-Paid. I might have to move my number to a different pre-paid and then move it back into a T-mobile Pre-Paid.

Edit: just realized I didn't mention I'm anticipating paying the ETF. I'm guessing you thought I meant returning/exchanging the phone.

Yes, that is what I thought you meant, but as long as you are willing to pay the ETF, they won't put any restrictions on what you choose to do.

I'm also thinking about getting the S3 and then waiting a month to pay the ETF, which should just allow me to get the S3 for cheaper. Is there anything wrong with my logic?

$200 up front
$200 ETF
$35 Activation Fee
$40-60 Service Premium over Prepaid (they charge the first two months up front)

That means about $500 total. Plus the tax on the phone purchase price of $300 (I think).

Will it be less than retail? Yes. Will it be less than what you would pay online? a month after release? Doubt it.

I suppose that's a fair point, but since my other alternative is the Galaxy Nexus, and I am still getting two months of service out of it... I'm not sure, I'll have to look more into the math.

I have 4 T mobile lines that all qualify for an upgrade. I'm thinking about getting a couple of One S's and selling them (currently going for around $400 new on ebay) then buying a couple Galaxy Nexus phones from Google Play.

That's probably your best bet if you want to sell one after the fact. However, that's probably what most are thinking too. Consequently, I think there will be a large influx of inventory into ebay for the one s which could drive the price down $40-$50.

I just got the one s a week ago on an online free promo. I was able to get $449 for it before shipping and fees (buy it now). I actually was dropping it somewhat fast because I wanted to get it sold before this promotion started driving down prices and/or making people wait.

Consequently, I would consider going for the GSII or even the blackberry bold 9900. You might be able to get more for the one s now, but I think almost everyone who is planning to sell it immediately will get the one S and drive the price bellow the other two.
