To anyone that is considering rooting...

Ok guys, as you've probably heard already, Sprint has released (not quite yet though) an new software update for our beloved Hero. This update is supposed to fix the two largest software flaws that we have complained about since the release of 2.1, laggy dialer, and the gps reboot issue. Despite the fact that these being fixed will likely satisfy many, I urge you to think twice before installing the update, once it is available that is... As with most, if not all, of our updates, this will probably patch root access. Although someone will re-root this, there is no telling how long you will be stuck with the phone as-is. Rooting the Hero has never been easier, using the universal androot Universal 1-Click root - xda-developers http://www.unrevoked.com/you can quickly gain root access by simply running an app you download. Once you are rooted through either of these methods, all you'd need to do is download rom manager through the market and use it to flash a recovery image. Once you've done this grand total of 15 minutes worth of work, without the use of a computer, you can flash any CDMA Hero rom you want from here Hero CDMA Android Development - xda-developers. For anyone on the fence about rooting, you should really consider this beforehand because if you install the new software update, chances are, you won't get the chance to root for quite some time.

just to add to this, the universal one click method DOES work with the .6 OTA (this was the "2.1 update 1", no the one coming out soon). there is no need to go back to .5 if you want to root.

I assume they can always reflash the original 2.1 update if they updated and wanted to root
