Root to root or not to root that is the question?

I have an unlocked desire hd on Orange network UK and loving my new phone, just wondering is it worth me routing? What are the pros n cons of routing? Thanks in advace

If you have up-to-date system provided by the official way, free memory to install apps (or can move apps to SD card), there's basically no need to root.
Advantages of rooting for you will be :
- installing unofficial ROMs (this is good for older devices with no more support)
- ability to customize launcher (icons, tray), but this can be also done by additional apps
- creating swap (more RAM memory) on sd card, but I think you don't need this
- CPU overclocking, but I think HD is fast enough (used for old devices to run faster or by freaks to run as fast as possible, when it's really not needed)

Disadvantages :
- if something goes wrong, you can damage the phone (but everything is well described, so there's no need to much fear)
- it can void warranty

If you have android 2.2 which i think is the newest version at the moment then it isnt really worth rooting unless you fancy going the extra step and changing cpu speeds and little changes like that mentioned above. If your happy with your phone as it is keep it that way untill you get a problem and feel like messing about with it =).

Well, with rooting, you can also back up your apps and preferences. You can also get rid of files and apps that you don't want (ie stock apps and that annoying start up sound). You can also change the font. Eventually, someone will create a Gingerbread ROM and that'd be cool.

However, I don't think there's an easy way to root. I rooted my Desire (now have the Desire HD) and it was fun. However, I've since lost interest because, being a relatively new Android user, I found the headache/heartache too much to deal with. I may reconsider if I can get Gingerbread at some point. Also, I'd love to get back the old Marketplace app (the new one doesn't allow FastWeb Installer by AppBrain, which was really good for trying new apps out).

Its worth rooting u can now install gingerbread rom thats very stable delete all the crap thats not need customize ure dhd more than just havin launcher pro will allow also rooting with aps2sd rom allows u to move more of the app to sd card than 2.2 does

Nope, 2.2.1 is out and software no. 1.32.405.6 is the old one.

But yea it is the most stable.

I think rooting on the new 1.72 is an issue from what I read over at XDA, but better check there.

Interesting thread. I was going to root my DHD, mainly to get gingerbread. Still not sure its a good idea or if i really need to do it. Some more reading required i think.

personally, i wouldnt if i were you. as i posted elsewhere, i have my N900 rooted and can see immense potential with that OS/firmware which was built to be really open, i havent done so for my DHD. mainly because i dont see too much merit besides removing bloatware, speeding up the phone etc. compared to the downside of not getting OTA updates, warranty issues etc. rooting does indeed give immense opportunity to do much more in case you are the adventurous kind, but perhaps since i already have a phone that is rooted with an OS that is really open, my desire to root the DHD is quite low...

I just temproot my phone, and downloaded SETcpu,
I set my cpu to run at 1ghz when being used, and 300mhz when not, hopfully this will give me some better battery life!
