Hello and welcome to Android Forums androidistic!

First and foremost, you may get a better/fuller response if this was posted in the root section for the Galaxy SII, here:-

Galaxy S2 - All Things Root - Android Forums

This has a sticky by slug pertaining to all things root:-

http://androidforums.com/galaxy-s2-...guide-updated-12-00-pm-bst-jul-03-2011-a.html

Which contains this guide to rooting:-

[ROM + Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KF1/2/3/4/, KG1/2/3/5/6/7 Download - xda-developers

Pro's to rooting...

Allows you to update your firmware quicker.
A wider choice of ROM's
Allows root only app's to run
Can tweak/enhance the phone's performance.

Con's to rooting...

Can void your phone's warranty
Can "brick" your phone
Some experimental mods are not stable
Requires research and reading

There are other pro's and con's but those are the main ones that come to mind.

Hope this helps. :D

if i was gonna root i'd probably follow this method as its the easiest ive seen:
[ROM + Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KF1/2/3/4/, KG1/2/3/5/6/7 Download - xda-developers

this, plus the above posted guides should give u plenty to chew on regarding the rooting process, and hopefully show u how easy its gonna be :D it wont change how ur phone looks or feels at all, or make u lose any data if u follow the guides carefully.

i dont use custom roms, but villainrom and lite'ning rom seem to be the most popular for the SGSS2, but let others comment on that

best root apps would be:
titanium backup: completely backup ur phone, freeze/uninstall bloatware and stuff that u cant remove normally. the backup is amazingly useful in case somethign really goes wrong while flashing a new firmware etc.. and u have to wipe ur phone. it restores it to exactly how it was. amazing app

root explorer: file explorer that lets u access all system files (no free version)

droidwall: pretty much a firewall, it allows u to allow/block any app's access to the internet

i also use SetDNS to change my dns server to google dns on all connections, u might not need to do this..

adfree blocks all ads in apps, and does a decent job

there are quite a few more, depending on wat ur lookin for :)

Hi I hope you are enjoying your SGS2. I've had mine about 4 weeks now and I cannot put it down and I've just installed the newest official firmware XXKG5. I updated my phone in the first week to XXKG6 at the time it was the latest firmware and improved battery and heat problems I was having, you don

Is this a contract phone or PAYG?
I always assumed that O2 contract phones were unlocked/sim free meaning the firmware would not have to be man handled by O2 before we got it.

It is a contract phone, I have spoken to O2 and they say they will not let the firmware out till they are happy with it, the firmware as I had explaind to me:
PDA:KF3/PHONE:KE7/CSC:KG2(O2U)
The O2U bit at the end is O2 UK?
Do you think that could be right?

Thanks all for our help, Now gone over to the dark side, I decided to go for lightening rom 6.1, I used the instructons fro XDA,

Even I could get it right,
Love it,
Thanks again!!!!
