Root To root or not to root?

Hey everyone,

I've been reading up on rooting here on the forum, but I can't decide whether to go ahead with it or not. I was wondering if I could get your opinions.

My Samsung Galaxy Ace is on O2, Android 2.3.3. It's unlocked and I'm using it on T-Mobile, but the O2 startups and shutdows annoy me and when there's talk of being a superuser...well, it makes it very tempting.

I'm slightly worried about even attempting the process. I'm not so worried about the warranty issue, but I am about making the phone unusable or causing some horrific malfunction that I can't come back from, ie bricking.

Does rooting mean that I will never be able to update the phone again?

Is there a way to undo the rooting if I ever needed to?

Is there a consequence that I don't know about that and that I really should?

I'd really appreciate your insights on this before I go ahead.

I was worried and inexperienced the first time I did anything like this but after many times of doing it have never run into any problems you can revert your phone back if you wish I would just suggest looking at some tutorials nothing majorly hard in anyway but definitely worth it

Good luck

The rooting process is low risk. If you follow the guide here it's almost a faultless process putting the zip file on your cpu then onto your sd card and installing. If you are sensible and follow the instructions clearly after reading up on exactly what it is you are doing you will look back and wonder why you ever worried.

Flashing a rom is higher risk purely because of variable features like your internet connection and I think that's probably what you will end up doing to get rid of the power on/off animations.

Before doing anything make sure you know why you are doing it and how you are going to achieve it.

Hey there in my opinion rooting can be a little dodgy but if you want to take the risk for the Rom then i say go for it.

By the way this is just my opinion and the risk is kind of low.

I have rooted and unrooted many times. Have found no issues whatsoever. Simply flash the update.zip from your recovery menu. And to unroot follow same procedure with different zip file.

When you do a whole new bunch of apps become available! (some of which i use daily)

I will back this up, I have only had my phone a short time 2-3 weeks and I rooted it and it was a very simple process using one downloaded file and the inclusive recovery tool on the phone. A rooted phone doesnt change how included apps work and they will function as normal.

What I suggest you do is root the phone, install CWM (enhanced recovery app) and at that point do a full backup using that app.

That way if you then end up breaking something using root you can rollback to the backup. However simply rooting the phone and then not using root for anything should be very low risk.

Hey guys. Thank you all so much for your replies and I really appreciate your advice. It helped to make a decision. I took the plunge, rooted and it went like a dream. Now I just need to work out how to change some of these settings :)

i have the same confusion of weather or not to root but i am also planed to take the dive into root but my question is do i need a specific zip file to root 2.3.6 version on SGA?
and if i install CWM on the phone is it reversible? i mean can i go back to my stock recovery mode anytime later?

i rooted my phone and i want to know if i can unroot if i have installed CWM?
