Help "Too many pattern attempts!" Google account doesn't work.

So I was at my friends house, when I decided to start trying to get into his phone just to mess with him. I thought if I could get in I'd just take some pictures or something to mess with him, and if I locked it, it would be locked for a half hour and it would be funny that he just couldn't use it for a while.

When the "Too many pattern attempts! Sign in with google account." screen came up I gave him the phone back, assuming he could simply sign in and have his phone unlocked again.

He tried putting his google account info in, but it didn't work. He tried a few more times, but still nothing. Then he tried signing into google on his computer with the same email and password, and it worked, so it must be looking for a different google account.

Then, he remembered his dad had his google account linked to the phone at one point (the phone was a hand me down). So, his dad tried his google account; still nothing. His dad, also, signed into google on his computer, confirming he put the right password in.

So, I have no idea what to do. I have his phone with me, as I said I'd try to get it unlocked. Is there any way other than signing in through google to get past this.

Thanks.

TL;DR: locked my friends phone; no google account that has been used on the phone will work.

Lesson #1.

Never, ever, screw with some one's phone. It will byte you in the ass every time.

I forgot my password on my very first smartphone.
I did not create a back door email address for it, nor did I add a back up phone number to use to get into it.

All of my appeals to Google fell on deaf ears, and I lost my very favorite email address with them.
I had to FDR the phone, and create a brand new email account, and that is just what I suspect your friend is going to have to do.

Try using Android Device Manager to reset the phone password.

Good luck trying to be still friends with the person after.
