Some say that hammering wood acts like shot peening metals in that it makes the surface of the wood more durable if it doesn't disintegrate from the hammer blows.
The trick is to cut the longest board first. When it's too short it becomes one of the shorter boards needed. You aren't really in trouble until you get down to cutting the shortest board for your project. A person only needs so many home made toothpicks.
