Help Top Bar Disappearing

This is my first HTC (I previously had a Nexus S, vanilla iCS android). One of the few things that's irritating me is that some apps keeps covering the top bar (where it shows the time and connections and notifications), that didn't happen with my nexus. Any way I can fix it? (is not rooted, but I will root if necessary, it's really annoying)

I think that's a function of the apps themselves. Maybe the difference is how they work in Gingerbread vs. ICS. I don't know of any hacks to fix it.
