Toshiba Thrive. Who is on the pre-order list? And some valuable information.

I was talking to someone on Toshiba's web site thru there online help. I was asking about a bundle package with accessories and was told to wait a few days and something should be up. So that could save a few pennies.

I for one have been waiting for this tablet, is anyone else planning on getting this?

I am on a list. Waiting to see what they might include in a package. Hopefully, at least a screen protector, an anti-glare one especially. I had been waiting on Notion Ink's Adam with a pixel Qi screen, but been too many problems for my liking so far.

I pre-ordered one of the 8gb models through Toshiba Direct a few days ago. I typically wait for some reviews on this sort of thing (Engadget's hands on a few weeks ago was very promising), but I've been sitting on a $150 credit from a class action laptop settlement for several months, so I went ahead and ordered one for $279. Considering that this is the first tablet that fits the bill for everything I want (full size USB, HDMI, and SD plus a removable battery), I took the plunge. I can't wait to get it!

I'm waiting for hands on reviews. Would like the tablet now but will wait. I tried an iPad 2 for ten days. Physically it was/is a great device. However; having to use iTunes for so many things and lack of office type software drove me to take it back to BB. For $600 plus tax I expect more from a device. The Thrive is coming with what appears to be a nice office package, full porting, and additional software overlaying the OS which looks good to me. However; hands on reviews will help me decide. If the reviews aren't as good as I expect, I'll probably wait to see what iOS5 offers. Toshiba has a good reputation for quality products so my expectations are high.

i have read meany great reviews for the tablet. there have been +'s around the board. strong cpu and replaceable battery, solid casing design and number of different ports. even the cameras are said to be top of the line. the one downside that was unanimous for the tablet was its weight. it is 771 grams or just over 1.5 lbs.
now i want to say, for those of you that want to get the most with your money, go for either the 8gb or the 16 gb (depending on your everyday use- games or movies- 16, web viewing and ebooks- 8gb) and then get a 16gb sd card for $30.
for the screen protector go to bestbuy and look for the shield. its this military grade scratch proof screen protector. but sinse it was made for the acer iconia, you probably wont find it for the toshiba. but not to worry because the acer iconia and the toshiba tablet have the exact same screen size dimensions.

Actually, every preview of the device that I've seen talks about how light it feels for being 1.6 lbs (not 1.5 lbs.) because of how well the weight is dispersed. Several people have said that it feels lighter than the Xoom even though it actually isn't. Of course, in comparison to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the iPad 2, they say it feels a little hefty. But compared to everything else, it's gotten pretty good remarks on how the weight feels in hand.

Where are the reviews? I have only seen hands-on reports and the stand-out so far is the display is reported to be soft and washed out. I have yet to see any other critique of any feature besides that (good or bad).

Only other info I have seen is the usual generic comments people make when briefly messing with a new device. We may be assuming the Thrive will be good, but the display might be the weakness.

Not long to find out if the display comments are a fluke or not.

Actually, none of the hands-on previews and reports I've seen have said much of anything about the display. There's a lot of talk in online forums that it looks soft and washed out on the videos, but of course none of the videos online are of great quality. Screen quality is also difficult to accurately get across through a video. It's odd that they're not really talking about the display though.

A lot of previews have commented on the feel of it (good, seemingly lighter due to how the weight is dispersed) and on how snappy the OS is. Beyond that, I haven't seen much else besides the basic rep rundown or a repeat of technical specs.

The most actual hands-on of a retail device that I've found is in this thread: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1624718&p=11

It was released in Australia this week (as the AT100). A lot of negative comments about a yellow ghosting on the screen. Some have commented that it might be a 3.0 thing (the Australian version shipped with 3.0 as opposed to the United States which will be getting 3.1).

There was a hands on from a tech site and per the techie, the display looked so soft and washed out, the person asked several times if the specs for resolution was accurate for the demos. This was at the most recent event that Toshiba showed the Thrive.

Added: Not heard of Android causing those issues. Almost certainly OEM drivers or a poor quality panel.

Actually, the Nexus S had issues with a yellowish tint/ghosting, and Google corrected this in an update by adjusting the color temperatures. Most of the time it is OEM drivers or poor quality, but it is possible. The Australia forums are reporting that Toshiba has also said that 3.1 will bring about graphical changes and enhancements in reference to their questions about the yellowing and dullness of the display.

We'll just have to wait and see what changes there are in the 3.1 version that comes to the U.S. The screen was the only thing that caused me to get rid of my G Tablet, so I'm hoping it will be up to par on the Thrive.

I still have my G. A key reason being that Tiger Arcade does not scale correctly with Honeycomb and makes an ok second tablet. Already paid for helps too.

Maybe the reasonably priced 8gig tab with all its features will help drive down some of the overpriced tabs.
I'm on a pre order list.

I suggest getting the 8gb and then buy a 64gb card for about $116. That would be 72gb of storage for about $30 less than the 32gb model. Slick, huh? :)

EDIT: I had a change of heart, due to the issues noted in post #20.

Hmmm - isn't there an advantage to having some apps/data on the local memory and not the sd card? I was thinking of getting the 16gb unit (assuming I can sell my xoom, no luck yet) as a balance between having decent onboard memory and then getting either a 32 or 64 gb card to finish it off.

Thanks to all. I decided that I go with the 16gb. My reasoning was that I may as well learn to become more of a power user (whatever the term may mean).

The good thing about the SDXC cards is they are a lot faster than micro or standard sd cards. The $115 64GB cards you can buy from Amazon handle hidef video with no issues, so provides a good litmus for performance :)

One advantage of the 16gb though is if the internal storage is treated as micro sd, it may be best to get that version, since more room for apps and data.

8GB would only mean about 5gb or so free (OS and stock apps taking the rest). This is kind of tight, not to mention Honeycomb has issues with allowing app installs if less than 1gb internal space- makes it even tighter.

On second thought, best to get the 16GB version, due to the issues mentioned!

what does everyone think of the new Toshiba Tablet the AT100 with Honeycomb 3.0 ??? just want to here good and bad about it ? whats the good things it does and has and whats the bad it does and has. has anyone had any problems with this device yet? i service these devices all the time so its good to kno. we are looking at improving the device in the new edition when it comes out but for now we need feedback on this one... we have been told the camera is really bad quality and no flash but other then that ?

I would have thought you would already have an issue summary due to the work that official Toshiba devs are doing in regards to the current issues that are already very well known.

Do you really work for Toshiba? No offense for asking.

One issue is the SD card slot should not stick out. This is really bad if people do notnotice when trying to remove the battery cover. Sems a very odd design decision for it to stick out in the first place.
