Help Touchscreen goes unresponsive

My wife's Inc has started acting oddly and at random. The most frequent thing is that the screen freezes - it stops reacting to touch input until you use the power button to turn the screen off and then back on - then it works fine. The other thing it does is that the homescreen will appear to stretch and shrink, juttering into different aspect ratios that are too big for the screen and too small. Swiping to another screen seems to stop this. I've tried shutting the phone down completely and then booting back up, but these things keep coming back eventually. It first happened when I installed an app that would disable the touchscreen when she was making a call (she accidentally hangs up on people with her hair or ear a lot) but I'm not sure if that is related or not - uninstalled the app and it hasn't made a diference.

We are going to try a factory reset next, but before I do that (several apps have data that needs to be backed-up first) I wondered if anyone else could offer any insight. Is it software or could it be the hardware?
