Help touchscreen not working

my friend has a motorola droid and the problem is like this:
after the phone stays a while in the pocket the touchscreen doesn t respond or it has a huge huge lag. if he leaves the phone lets say on the desk some amount of time the touch is working normally.
is it a software or a hardware problem ?

Sounds like it might be getting hot. Is your friend porting the phone to sleep (usually by pressing the power button once) before putting it in the pocket'

I had the same problem as I was carrying my droid in my back pocket. I would put to sleep before doing that, but it would still go crazy and either not work or act possessed! I stopped carrying it in my pocket for the most the time and it has been good for about a week. If I do put it in my pocket for a short time, I make sure to aim the screen away from my body. Seems to be helping so far.
