Help Trackball light issue

Is there any way whatsoever to turn -off- the trackball light? It's horrendously bright and as long as the phone is on, it's glowing radiantly, so dimming the screen while I read a book in order to let my husband sleep is a moot point. I have it set to blink for notifications, but I can find no setting to simply turn it off. Am I missing something?

I had searched but did not find that thread after browsing through several pages. Perhaps I wasn't searching for the right keywords. This thread seems to be full of mean people, but it does answer my question. Thanks!

Actually, that thread helped not at all. Searching for apps that turn off the trackball seems to yield no results. Is it possible to offer suggestions to look for?

I had tried that, but all I got were threads about the sensitivity. Still could use some suggestions on apps, as the only ones I can find are flashlights and one for a rooted phone, which will probably never be my phone, as I am of the 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' camp.

Yeah, realized the trackball doesn't blink on this one. On the non-Sprint Hero, the trackball blinks, at least according to the ads. My notification light is what blinks. Still, how do I turn this bloody thing off??

I dont know why they did away with the option to turn it off in 2.1. In 1.5 you were able to choose how long it would stay on and you actually had the option to turn it off.
Why the hell would they take this option out is beyond me

I had this problem, too. If you are rooted, there is an app called LEDs hack that will disable your LEDs. It even has a toggle widget. I use it all the time when reading from my Kindle app at night. If you are not rooted, then I don't think you have any other options.

I dont see why someone cant make an app to be able to control the trackball light...there are many apps out there for led and trackball control just not for the hero. I would do it but dont know anything about creating an app.

Hi, Try Blink in the market

Blinklets you customize your system and more LED alerts in your way!

When I still had my Hero, I found out after the 2.1 update, the trackball turned on whenever the light sensor was reading low enough to kick on the lights for the buttons as well. There really was no way, without rooting, to get it to turn off, from what I found at least.

Dude! Root your phone and your problem is solved. Again, "LEDs hack" in the market place turns off your trackball light.

yea I hear ya but besides not wanting to void my warranty I am not too computer savy and the rooting instructions for the Sprint HTC Hero is umm....intimidating

try a piece of electrical tape, it should do the trick until you need the trackball for something.
