Root trackball not working fix

fhorta

Newbie
i'm trying to root my eris and having the trackball not working issue when in recovery mode. i followed instructions on loading software so that i can use up/down vol, and green/red buttons to scroll through recovery menu. when in recovery mode those keys are not working either.

i wonder if the file i downloaded is corrupt? it looks like a paper with a question mark on it when i look at it in the sd/gscript/tools destination.
before i downloaded that file it gave a message saying "it may not be supported. do you want to download anyway". anybody have any suggestions. thanks

What is the file size of the zip file which you downloaded? It should be 3,915,425 bytes. Also, which "Scenario" did you use to try to install the recovery in these steps? http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...2-custom-recovery-trackball-not-required.html

well. after reading details on the recovery ra-eris-v16.2 i read that this file will not work on phones that are NOT rooted. my eris is not yet rooted. so how can i root my phone if track ball does not work??

i read that there is a way to do it via pc, but instruction say to boot into amon ra recovery, or something but i no idea how to do that. also i guess i would have to set my pc drivers to communictae with phone via usb cable?? anyone know where i can find more detailed instructions.

i just want to be able to root this phone to see if that fixes the "silent bug issue" (people can't hear me on phone, but i can hear them). :(

If you know that your trackball doesn't work in Recovery, then your phone is already rooted!

However, there is a fairly easy answer: in the optional trackball instructions, use Scenario number 5.

You do this all from the Eris. Start the Eris normally, and then make sure, from home, menu->settings->applications->Unknown sources is checked.

Then, download the file here: https://sites.google.com/site/scaryalienware/downloads/one-click-tbo.apk (You can download this using your PC and copy to your SD card if you like, or download right from the Eris browser.)

You should also install the application Astro File Manager from the market/Play Store. Start Astro and locate the file "one-click-tbo.apk" (it may be in the "downloads" folder on your SD card, or wherever you copied it from your PC.) When you open that file in Astro, it will ask if you want to install it; go ahead and let it install.

Then run the 1-click Eris application that should be in your application drawer. You press the button. Shut down the phone and restart it, like you wanted to make a phone call. Then, shut down the phone again.

Now, when you start the phone while holding VolUp, you will have the version of Amon_RA recovery that works with the hardware keys rather than just the trackball.

Good luck.

Two other things:

Here is Astro File Manager in the market. It is a free app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5tZXRhZ28uYXN0cm8iXQ..

Second, there are instructions on how to install a custom ROM using Amon_RA Recovery starting in this fourth post in the "Root For Dummies" thread: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html#post1186824

A good custom ROM to install is one called xtrSENSE. You can use the instructions in that thread to install xtrSENSE, which you can download from my Dropbox here, if you do not already have it: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/220420/Eris/xtrSENSE/xtrSENSE5.0.1.zip

ya. i have the extrsense file loaded on phone already. and i was going by the rooting for dummies instructions when trying to root; i just get stuck at the point where i turn phone off, and turn phone back on while pressing volume up...since trackball does not function i cannot scroll through menu. but i will try your instructions on prior post when i get home. thanks for the link to file needed.

Still no luck...after following steps when I go into recovery mode up/down volume buttons and red/green buttons dont move anything..i got astro file, located one-click app in downloads clicked , a pop up imstructed to reboot turn back on etc....but when in recovery mode nothing moves except when I press trackball down to reboot. What could I be doing wrong.....here some software specifications on eris:
build num-2.41.605.6 cl335228 release keys
software num-same first 6 digits above

I dont know if this matters....any ideas

Software versions on the phone OS don't matter in this case. The questions is, when you start the phone in Recovery, does the screen say "[trackball not required]" at the bottom? The screen that looks like this:

If not, again, these are the steps:

after running the 1-click Eris root app, you read the disclaimer and then press the button on the screen to root the phone.

Then shut down and restart the phone without starting in Recovery first. (It is important to do this before trying to start up in Recovery.)

Then shut down the phone.

Then restart in Recovery by starting while holding VolUp.

Does that show "[trackball not required]"?

Ya, I did exaxtly as instructed, turned off, turned on, turned off then turned on while volume up. But there is no trackball not required message at th:confused:e bottom

Try this:

go into settings->applications->manage applications. Try to find the 1-click Eris root app in that list, tap it, and hopefully there is a button to uninstall the app.

If you have then uninstalled it - check to see that it is not in the app drawer - then try going into Astro File Manager and install the app again. THen go through the rooting steps. Let's see if that works.

I think that you had the regular version of the 1-click app already installed and so you could not install the one with the new recovery, because the app was already installed.

Ok, just tried to go with the TBO version but no go here. Vol up + power still says it's the regular Amon Recovery.
That's not the real problem though. Now Titanium Backup doesn't recognize the phone as a rooted user. Neither does Quick Boot.
Will a Nandroid restore take me back to root as it was before? Will I need to do some fiddling elsewhere?
TiBU says I need to verify my ROM is rooted and includes BusyBox if that sounds familiar to anyone...

Well, I dont know exacly what I did but I went ahead and deleted one click app from the app drawer and when I rebooted in recovery I now get the trckball optional message an cann now scroll up n down....but now when I get to the part of flashing extrsense rom the only options is gscript and rootme. There is no sdcard showing...thanks for the help and any ideas will be appreciated.

Just make sure that the file xtrSENSE5.0.1.zip is on the SD card - not stored in a folder on the SD card, but just on what is called the root directory of the SD card (the highes level you can get to on the SD card so you are still on the SD card but not in a folder.) Also make sure that it is the zip file and that you have not unzipped the file and then copied files over.

Ok , got the file where it needs to be so now it comes up on recovery. Now when I try to flash after a few minutes of processing it says corrupt file error. I think the problem is as you stated , I extracted the file and didnt leave it zipped. Ill try the zip file. Thanks.

Well, I left file zipped but stll get same error message of corrupt file . File was on the download section of sd card then I moved it to the /sdcard section. When im recovery I see rootme and extrasense n I highlight extrasense I get that message.

I'm late coming in to this. Did you check your md5 sums?

I seen there is a series of numbers and letters when I check details of extrasense for md5 sums. If there was somerhing wrong with that how would I know?

MD5 sums or not, I think it's pretty clear that the xtrSENSE5.0.1.zip file that you have was an aborted download. The file should be 117,127,390 bytes long (or 111.7 MB), and if it is not that long, you will need to download it again.

fhorta, I am pretty sure that you have Astro File Manager on your phone. You can find the MD5 hash of any file on your SD card by long-pressing on the file, which will bring up a small sub-menu. Choose the "Details" from that and the details will show you what the MD5 is for that file. (It takes a few seconds for the MD5 to be calculated and be displayed. The details also shows the size of the file in bytes, so you can check that it is 117,127,390 bytes while you are waiting.)

xtrSENSE5.0.1.zip when properly downloaded has an MD5 hash of 67abd6c555b726017586ad154e456041. You don't really need to check the full 32 characters - if the first 5 and last 5 match (or the first 10, or even the first 8), I am sure that the file is completely downloaded.

Checked the file and its the same size as stated. but none of.the first 5 or even 10 numbers match. This means a reload right? If I download agaain from same link would.it still be bad. Or is there another link?

Thanks for the help. I got it to flash and now have the extrsense file rom on phone. Well my intent was to see if flashing a new rom would fix the silent bug issue. But still no improvememt. But I got it rooted! Thanks again.
