Tracking my Trip

Newbie
I hope to be making a trip across France later this year, and I would like my family back home to be able to see where I am at any particular time. I will have my Galaxy S2 with me and it seems that can let the outside world know it's location.

I have had a quick look at apps like LocateMyDroid to keep track of me, but AndroidLost looks the best bet.

This is a subject about which I know absolutely nothing, so any apps, tips, pointers, or hints about tracking my journey from back home would be gratefully accepted.

Assuming you have already addressed the international thing. Facebook may be a good way to do what you want. There is a setting in the Facebook app that allows location when facebook is accessed. You could log on periodically and facebook would update your location. I know it does this, but don't know much about the specifics. I do know that it places you on a map via a marker.

I would have thought Latitude was a good shout. Runs quietly in the background, not too much battery drain. Either that or use something like flickr to upload pics to a gallery and tag your location.

"My tracks". I would guess Whatever you end up using, will be a big battery drain on your phone. I use this app to record my mountain bike rides, and a few trips. Battery has not been an issue for me because I have an extended battery. This will record your route and mark points of interest, elevation change, speed, and distance. However, I do not think this has the ability for someone to keep tabs on you at any given time.

Well, thank you all very much for all that - very interesting indeed.

BigRedGonzo - I'm not currently a Facebook user (too old I'm afraid) but that sounds very promising. I will look into it.

CodeMonkey - Data may or may not be an issue as I am looking into getting French SIM cards while we are there so we wouldn't technically be roaming. Otherwise, I would probably wait for wifi hotspots in which case Glympse looks like a good option.

FCUM - I will also look at Latitude, both that and Glympse have been recommended elsewhere.

Ricky Babalu - not heard of My Tracks but just looked it up on Playstore and it too looks interesting. Battery life is not a problem as I am actually driving the support car not cycling. :)

So - thank you all again, that's exactly the sort of thing I was hoping for. I will now go away and play with all these apps.
