Transferring apps from one SD to another

I was gonna say dropbox but you already sent it off. Card, but no phone, well you need a card reader. Surely you will be able to hook it up USB when it's been fixed?

Thanks for your response. I have copied the contents of my SD card to my PC via a card reader. But if I simply copy the data to a new card in a factory reset phone will the apps still be available and fully functioning in the apps draw? My last experience showed that the contents of the SD card were not visible or not accepted on my repaired phone.

Well no, you'll have to install them again. Can you see the actual .apk files on your memory card, or is it just other files & folders created by those apps?

I use an app called appcombine to save .apk files (the apps) to card. As long as you have the .apk files you can install them again.

There is also appbrain (website) where you can browse apps & if you have appbrain app & fast web installer on your phone it can push apps to you.

Hi !on,

Thanks for the info. I can not see the .apk files on my SD card. So I guess that I shall have to re-download my apps from Google Play.

When I get my phone repaired and a new SD card I shall try out AppBrain and Appcombined as suggested.

Cheers.

The apps are inside the .android_secure folder on the sd card. You'll probably find that when you try to look at it from within Android it appears to be empty, but if you mount the card on a computer you should be able to see the contents: a collection of .asec files, which are encrypted versions of the apps.

You might actually be able to manually reinstall the apps from there, though your data were on the phone and will have been wiped. When the phone is running Android you can access the contents of .android_secure through the mount point /mnt/asec. So if you take your favourite file explorer to /mnt/asec you should find a set of folders corresponding to the apps stored there (actually the contents of the .asec files). Enter an app folder and you'll find the .apk, in which case you can click on that to install the app.

If the .asec files are there but you can't see app folders in /mnt/asec then I guess the phone wants something else, that was wiped when the phone was, before it will decode them. In that case you'll just have to reinstall from scratch. But if you took the card out before wiping the phone then this might work - whether it's less work than just downloading everything again is another question :)

Finally, there is an option in the privacy settings to let Google back up more of your stuff, which might simplify reinstallation in these cases. But you need to set that before sending the phone off.
