transferring data from iphone to samsung galaxy A50

I just bought my first android phone in over 10 years today. My last three phones have been all iphones. I've been watching various videos on the internet which show the process of transferring data from iPhone to android using smart switch along with a dongle and cable.

I want to keep my contacts, pictures and text messages so this process would be ideal. Unfortunately there is no dongle in the box and would like some advice or guidance as to what is the easiest and hassle free way to port the important information from my iPhone to my new A50?

here you go:
Transfer content from an IOS device with Samsung Smart Switch

looks like you do not need a dongle to use smart switch. you can do it wirelessly:thumbsupdroid:

I ended up doing it wirelessly. There was no dongle in the box to allow me to use the cables with the old phone. The process was pretty straight forward with a few hiccups. I wasn't able to transfer over my WhatsApp account so I lost all my messages, but no big deal.

Also my SMS didn't transfer over. A bit of searching on t'internet led me to iSMS2droid which allowed me to transfer my SMS over by backing up the iPhone and searching for the relevant folder in the backup which related to text messages. I transferred the folder onto the new phone and used the app to extract the text messages and put them on the new phone.

The A50 itself is a revelation. Coming from an iPhone 6 the A50 is super fast responsive and a great phone. The customization level of android 9 will take a bit of getting used to.

Does the iOS WhatsApp app not let you do a backup which you can copy over (either by cable or via some cloud)?

Googling it after the fact it would seem that it is a simple enough process exactly as you describe. I wasn't too worried about it but I'll know the process in future if anyone is in a similar situation

Now that you escaped the dark side, you can do daily, weekly monthly backups on Whatsapp. I save my backups to Google Drive.
