Trekkies discussion - TNG (The Nerd Generation)

Could have been better. I think they tried a little too much with it. The idea of an Android being the property of Star Fleet was covered much better in season 2, episode #9 "The Measure of a Man". Adding that subplot really just took away from the idea of Data procreating.

I thought it deserved a longer story thread. Maybe they could have kept Lal as a character, at least for a two part story, maybe longer. Was it explained why Lal developed emotions, without the help of an emotion chip? I think the episode was rather spoiled by a lame and soppy ending. And yes, they already established that Data could not be property of Star Fleet, but there are still questions of whether Data's creation was a scientific experiment, developed using Star Fleet resources, and therefore technically would be their property?
I did think that episode contained the most hilarious moment to date, when Data walks in to 10 Forward, and asks Riker "What are your intentions towards my Daughter" :D

There are a few nice comedic moments with Riker in later episodes, too. :D

I think it was supposed to be assumed that Data was able to "improve" his original design via the philosophical discussion of why he wanted to have an offspring. Again, I think they tried to cover too much and couldn't develop enough of any one topic to be interesting enough. Maybe a two-part episode , or keeping Lal around would have made it better.

Just had "The best of both worlds" with Locutus. Great episode. Pity we didn't see more of Lt Commander Shelby.
I thought the follow up episode with Picard trying to come to terms with it was also good.

This will be .... controversial, but ya know it's Star Trek, and this way it's free ... so ...

CBS is offering a free month, just use code STREAMNOW for a free month to catch up on the first season.

Yea, I guess I am of the nerd generation too. I read all of this and confess to having seen nearly all. I have not seen Babylon 5 and I struggled trying to watch Enterprise because of Bakula, who I loved in Quantum Leap. I have yet to start Discovery though

Tim Russ (Tuvok) directed this Star Trek movie. I only had a chance to watch a few minutes of it but the comments below it praise the movie quite a bit. I don't know if you can find it anywhere beside youtube tho

Hi, everyone. Just found this thread and thought I'd join in (somewhat late).

Yeah, I still think Diana Muldaur was a show killer as Dr. Pulowski.

I wasn't impressed with the acting in the first 2 seasons. I actually liked Diana Muldaur because she was the only one who could act. I liked her character as well, but it seemed few others did.

Does the saucer section have it's own warp engines, or is it impulse power only?

I used to play the Star Trek Starship Tactical Combat Simulator by FASA. The original game used TOS ships. Then they published materials for TNG ships. I think the FASA material is unofficial, but it does show the saucer section having warp engines.

In S3 E15 "Yesterday's Enterprise", Tasha Yar makes a re-appearance. It got me wondering why they killed her off so quickly, and why come back for a guest appearance?

Denise Crosby was not happy with the character she played. She had a meeting with Roddenberry and they agreed to kill off her character, so that Crosby could leave the show.

I thought the follow up episode with Picard trying to come to terms with it was also good.

At the time, I didn't like Picard and really liked Riker. I was secretly hoping Picard would die and Riker would become captain with Shelby as first officer. It wasn't until a bit later in the series that I started to really liked Picard. I guess Stewart's Shakespearean acting just turned me off at the start. I felt he got better in the role about half way through the series. In the 2-parter, I was rather disappointed in Riker. He seemed to lack confidence when Picard was taken by the Borg. I wanted to see his character be stronger. It was around where these episodes aired when I started to like Picard more than Riker.

We just got to the episode with everyone's favourite Bajoran - Ensign Ro.
Haven't seen Wes for a good few episodes. Not that I'm complaining, but maybe he was in the middle of real school exams, or something?
