Root Tried getting froyo. Failed.

I have an htc desire, maybe had at this point, rooted. I messed around with it for awhile deleting apps I hated, attempting to get swype. Got swype, but the "swyping" part didn't work. I then was going to get froyo thinking things may be easier after that. Okay. I went to the xda developers website and got the radio rom and froyo rom onto my sd card. Went to bootloader and recovery. At that point I installed froyo first instead of the radio rom. Rebooted, got stuck on loader screen rebooted then installed radio rom just to reboot and get stuck on loader screen again.... Tried a few other things. I'm still stuck on loading screen. I'm pretty sure I tried to put a european version of froyo on my phone. I have U.S. Cellular. Save me. :))))

You say "stuck on bootloader" - can you get into recovery? If so I may be able to advise, but if not you might need someone more knowledgeable - I'll make some suggestions anyway, but as they are things I've never done please don't take them as gospel!

If you can get into recovery, there are a couple more questions:

* Are US Cellular CDMA or GSM? After a quick google I think they are CDMA.
* Did you take a nandroid backup before flashing?
* What radio did you flash? If it was a GSM one, do you know where to find a CDMA one (because I don't)?
* What ROM did you flash (link to XDA is good for both of these questions)?

If you'd only flashed a ROM and could get into recovery, then I'd say stick a CDMA ROM onto your SD card and flash that (after wiping the phone), or better, just restore from the nandroid if you took it. If you've flashed an incorrect radio I'd want to fix that first (radio problems are more dangerous, and I'd not want to risk making it worse) - hence the question about CDMA radios. If you can find a correct radio and can get into recovery, try to fix that.

If you can't get into recovery, can you talk to the phone by USB? And did you make a "Goldcard"? Because my next instinct is to try an RUU (a windows program which reflashes the phone completely - plug the phone into the computer and run the program). If that works you'll have a stock, unrooted phone with your data wiped, but you'll have a phone. However, there's a catch: if it's a CDMA phone, the site that we normally look to for RUUs only has the one, and that's labelled "Alltel": Index of /shipped/Bravo_C/. So you'll need a goldcard to trick it into flashing on your phone (i.e. to ignore the fact that your phone came from a different network), and you need your phone to be bootable to make a goldcard if you don't have it.

The terms I use here ("goldcard", "ruu") are explained in the FAQs linked in DanFrance's signature (not hard to find one of his posts). I realise that what I've posted here is just a couple of outline suggestions, rather than a detailed recipe, but as I don't have a CDMA phone and have never had this problem I can't really do more than that. If we're lucky someone more knowledgeable will come along.

It is a real booby trap that HTC call both the GSM and CDMA versions "Desire", because there are significant internal differences. Most of the mods at XDA are for GSM Desires, so it's CDMA users who mostly need to watch out. The thread Desire Index - Everything Desire is here! [UPDATED: 4/1] [Lots 'o' new things!] - xda-developers does have a specific section for CDMA ROMs, but it's probably best to assume that things which aren't explicitly labelled "CDMA" are GSM unless you really know otherwise.

Us cellular = cdma I thought.

If so, uh oh.

You just flashed a gsm radio.

If you haven't broken your phone, you need to ensure you have a cdma compatible Rom. Chances are though, if radio flash was successful, phone is gone

People, please read up on what you are doing before jumping in with both feet

Dang, I'm almost certain I took a GSM rom. I don't know how much you guys know about U.S. Cellular, but I work at one. I didn't back up my phone because I didn't think I would mess up, and I didn't read up on basically anything because I was wanting to learn some of this trade myself. I have a plentiful amount of computers at work seeing as it doubles over as a computer repair store. USB does work. I'm not necessarily stuck. I can go into recovery and still install zips from sd card but I was hoping I could find an HTC Desire stock rom and basically start over. Re-root and everything. Let me know if that helps you anymore. Thanks.
Correct U.S. Cellular is CDMA and I get phone replacement so if I throw my phone in the road I can get a new free one and start over if all else fails.

Just don't flash anything gsm next time ;). Roms can be flashed over but radio is in nvram and Is very secure. If you flash a corrupt radio - brick. If you flash a gsm radio on cdma, chances are - brick

Unfortunately the first lesson is to read up on the pitfalls first - and backup (nandroid) before flashing anything. And the second is that you need to be careful with radios in particular :(

As you say, you are not necessarily stuck if you can still connect via usb and flash. You didn't actually say what radio file was used, so we're still assuming it was GSM but would be good to confirm - because if you have found and flashed a CDMA radio things would be a lot simpler!.

The RUU, if it could be run successfully, would reset everything. I've tried googling "US Cellular RUU" and "CDMA Desire RUU" and found a small number of CDMA RUUs, but none that are US Cellular. So assuming that CDMA handsets work like GSM you'd need a goldcard to run one of these, which you don't have. That's also assuming that the hardware is still capable of running it - I really don't know what a GSM radio would do, though still being able to use usb is a good sign. One thread in the cyanogenmod forum suggested that a US Cellular RUU was expected soon, but I don't know how reliable that information is - right now though I can't see any sign that it's available.

Well a gsm radio will include drivers for the gsm radio hardware and vice versa as the hardware is different

Haha. I'm screwed I suppose. I'll just wait for the OTA 2.2 update THEN root my phone. That's only assuming that U.S. Cellular being as lazy with the actual PHONE part of the business as they are, will get it out in time. I'll just use up my last phone replacement and get a new one. THANK! :)
