Help Tried to update

I turned the laptop on this morning and a message flashed up saying Kies had found an update for my s2.
I came on here to check about it (I'm on Orange UK) as I dont want to go to ICS until it has less issues. I find it's just the next GB so no problem. I followed all instructions and after a few min's the computer and phone locked up. Ileft it for about an hour but everything was locked. Eventually I gave up and had to manually shut the laptop down. I unplugged the phone but had to pull the battery to get it to do anything. Fearing the worst I fired the phone back up but everything SEEMS to be fine with it.
However, on the computer I keep getting a message saying the update wasn't succesful and I need to do an emergency recovery.
I followed instructions but cant get the phone into recovery mode(?)
I just keep getting the message saying it has failed.

Any ideas? Is it worth just leaving it if the phone is working?
How do I get the phone int recovery mode?

Sorry to ramble.

Honestly I don't have much experience with kies as i've always been a custom ROM sort of guy but I'd say if your phone works at the moment there's no need for the emergency recovery. I'd guess your best bet would be to try and clear kies. I assume it thinks the failed upgrade messed your phone up so its trying to fix it.

Edit: I forgot something. To get into recovery it's volume up, power and menu.
