Triumph on sale at Virgin $210

I just ordered one! Use the promo "Giving"

Now as a complete smartphone noob, I have questions. I have been perusing this site for a while now, and think I know the answers to 1 and 2 but was wanting to see what others say.

1) To root or not to root?

2) To ROM or not to ROM?

3) If I do either, will I have to re-install any apps I installed? What about the ones I pay for, can I just re install them?

I'm sure I'll think of others ;)

Thanks

MY OPINION (and that's all it is for the first 2):
1. yes
2. yes
3. You will have to reinstall your apps if you put a new ROM on your phone. It isn't hard to do, either back them up beforehand or redownload them from the market. The apps you pay for are linked to your Google account so you can access them even if you switch phones.

Rooting is STUPID easy. Install gingerbreak, click "Root", and you are done.

Installing a custom recovery is also STUPID easy. Boot into download mode (Vol Down and Power), plug the phone in, download recovery.img, rename the one on the phone, drag the new one onto the phone, done.

Once you have that, you can backup, so play with all the ROMs you want, you can always restore. I as pretty happy with the device on stock, but I found CM7 provides a MUCH better network connection

Thanks!

As I said I have perused this site for sometime, and have come across the guides and videos, so I'm sure I can do it. I suppose the real question would be which ROM, I'm leaning towards the CM7, and of course there's the CM9 ((ICS?)(who names these things??)) ROM he's working on.

Now, I'm off to Amazon to find spare batteries, charger, cases...
Suggestions?

Again Thanks for all the help and info you guys provide, it maid my decision to buy the MT easier.

As for spare accessories - here's some inexpensive gift ideas for yourself or someone else you know with the MT (I'm not endorsing any particular seller - just had good luck with these products):

1). An OEM Motorola USB Charging Cable for use with a PC (leave the other with the AC charger at home).
eBay:
New OEM Motorola USB Data Cable Atrix 4G Entice Charm | eBay

2). An OEM Motorola Charger for your car.
eBay:
MOTOROLA OEM DELUXE CAR CHARGER for MOTOROLA TRIUMPH | eBay

I recommend the above two, because like the one that comes with your phone, the holograms on the OEM cables/chargers are "up" when plugging them into the phone... and the orientation is a big help!

3). A Bluetooth receiver you can use with a pair of amplified computer speakers for a micro stereo, or to stream BT from your phone to a regular stereo!
eBay:
BLUETOOTH A2DP HEADSET ADAPTER AUDIO RECEIVER DONGLE | eBay

4). Micro HDMI cable to send video and audio to your TV or A/V receiver.
eBay:
6FT Gold Cable 24K Micro HDMI Adapter Cable Type A to D | eBay

If you don't mind getting a non OEM Usb cable, eBay has them for .99 cents. let me know if you'd like me to scrounge up the auction. I have about 8 USB cables laying around the apartment.

I'd recommend a case as well. I love the Rocket fish one but eBay has a huge selection of cases as well.

Thanks a jillion!!

I've been shopping for this phone for a long time. Best I could find was $220 + $10 activation fee. And I had to drive over 100 mile RT to pick it up.

I ordered from Virgin and applied your code . It said I was a VIP??

Where did you learn about this sale??
inquiring minds etc.

I saw it on the Fat Wallet web site. I have been looking for a good price for over a month myself, I was going to wait until Black Friday, but this came up.

True, I've used non-OEM also, but like I said, the hologram indicators on the OEM cable and charging products are worth the additional cost. Also, I think the OEM cables have better connectors and I have never had a problem with them.

The price differential is so little, this is an area where I wouldn't go lowest cost.

I have never had an issue with non-OEM chargers, others have. You will have to see if you do or not. I presonally don't find the holographic sticker any more help for anything (but it doesn't hinder anything either!). You are probably safer to go with an OEM one, but I have some from old phones that I use just fine. They have longer cables too, and that is nice a lot of times.
