Root Trouble Adding Boot Animation To Droid Razr

HJP

Lurker
So, I have the zip file of my boot animation on my sd card, but when I try to change the name of my stock boot animation it won't let me, and then if I try to move my new boot animation to where my stock one it won't let me. Anybody else having these problems?

You're rooted right? If so you're going to have to use a root explorer that allows you to modify system files by changing it to r/w

You don't actually have to change the name of - or do anything to - the existing animation. Just save the file you want use in /data/local. The file MUST be named 'bootanimation.zip' - no quotes of course. The OS checks this location for a boot animation and will use it if it's there, ignoring the one stock animation.
This assumes that you're rooted, and have a file explorer that will get you access to /data/local.

It is best to change the name of the stock one by adding .Bak at the end to keep it backed up so it is easy to restore it if need be.

I respectfully disagree :)
If you're not overwriting the original, there is no need to rename it/back it up.
When booting, the OS looks first to /data/local to see if there is a bootanimation.zip file there, if it exists it uses it. If it doesn't exist then it uses the current default animation which is stored in a different location. No harm is being done to the stock boot animation if you store the one you want to use in /data/local. If you want to go back to the stock animation, you just delete bootanimation.zip out of /data/local and you're back on stock.
