Help Trouble with contacts

Lurker
Hi everyone,

I got my DNA this afternoon and I absolutely LOVE it. I had a Droid X previously for 2.5 years that I also loved but the USB port went bad and since I was eligible for an upgrade, I decided to go for the DNA.

One very annoying issue that I'm having is that I'm missing information for a lot of my contacts. I thought that they were synced up with Google and while the vast majority of them did copy over correctly, I'm missing some phone numbers for people and I'm missing other people entirely. For the most part, it seems like when I had a Facebook contact AND additional information, the additional information (phone number, etc) did not carry over. Is there anything that I can try? If the USB port is bad in my old Droid X, is there another way to move the contacts from one phone to another phone, even if the information was stored on the phone itself? Is it possible to remove all contacts and start over (I have a bunch of duplicates also).

Also, on another note, is it worth it to buy a case and screen protector? I never got one for my Droid X and that thing survived being dropped, being rubbed against my keys in my pocket every day and getting tossed into a cup holder with change in it whenever I drove. After 2.5 years, it barely even had any dings on it. Are the DNAs built similar to the Droid X's? The guy at Verizon was telling me that the "oils from my fingers" can screw up the screen, which obviously isn't true, but I just wanted to see if you guys thought it was worth buying a case and screen cover...

Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can offer....

Your old phone should still be able to connect to the internet via wifi. This will allow you to resync your old phone if needed.

On the DNA - When you open the "People" app, look up top and click "Phonebook" to see what list your pulling from. What is checked here can make a difference in who and what you see. This can be checked on your old phone as well (although getting the list will probably be done differently) and it's possible that the old phone was only syncing what you had checked and you're missing the data from the uncheck options.

Also check...

On the DNA - Once in the "People" app, top right click "Menu", then "Settings" and check to see if you have "Only with phone number" checked. Uncheck this if you need to have people without phone numbers viewed from the "People" app.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your help! BTW, I love your name (I do research on veterans and I'm a big military and history buff).

That sounds like what happened - only part of my phonebook appeared to be syncing with Google for whatever reason. I'll play with my Droid X and try to figure out a way to get the whole phonebook to sync up. I played around with the phonebook options, as you suggested, but it looks like I'm still missing a bunch of phone numbers from people

Is there an easy way, short of wiping out the whole phone, to clear out multiple contacts? Ideally, I would just remove all of my contacts and let the phone sync up with whatever is in Google (which will hopefully be everything that was in my old Droid X).

edit: Nevermind, just figured it out. It's under apps, contacts storage, "clear data."

OK, so I figured it out. For anyone who might find it helpful, here is what I did:

1) I exported my contacts from my old phone (I emailed the file to myself)

2) I downloaded the file onto my new phone from my email and when asked, I selected "import into Google"

3) I had a bunch of duplicates (because I guess I had some of the same people stored on my old phone and on Google), so I let the phone sync with Google so I could edit it more comfortably on my computer

4) I erased all of my contacts from my new phone and turned auto sync off

5) I removed all of the duplicates using Google (Google has a function to do it) and I cleaned up a bunch of other contacts

6) I let my new phone sync up with Google again and now everything looks like it is there
