It didn't work for me on CM9 DT. When I replace the bootanimation.zip, instead of seeing the new 3D animation I just get a boring "android" logo with no animation at all.

Everyone make sure you have the permissions changed to rw-r--r-- or in a check box

I'm a moron. I had renamed the zip file to store it with the other boot animation files I have, and I completely forgot to fix the name after I moved the file. It works fine now, and I didn't have to change permissions. I'm not sure I really like it, but it does work.
