If you are willing to learn, Do what I did I found a Java for Kids book, then moved to the For Dummies books and on up from there. I also have a friend that works for a major aircraft company in the NW and he is a little Java code monkey for them. If I get confussed on something he is always willing to help, Just like everyone else here too I'm sure!
I can't judge about "Java and XML for Dummies" as I haven't read it. However, if you are starting to learn Java, best get a _Java_ book. The one you mentioned does not seem to be going into Java but merely the combination of Java with XML (Which is not the same as the xml View Stuff in Android.).
If you are new to programming, I urge you to find a JAVA class at a local 2 yr college. Otherwise, you will get frustrated and quit. A class won;t teach you much, but it will get you over the hardest learning curves.
