I am trying to Root my Sprint CDMA Hero with RegawMOD Hero Rooter v1.3 but when I run it without the phone even plugged in it says connected not a cdma hero.... Anyone have a fix or work around for this? I appreciate any help

I cannot find an answer to your question using that method either. But here is a file called z4root it is an app that is no longer available from the market. It roots your phone and you dont need your computer. Just download the file, download a file explorer for the market(ie es file explorer or atro file manager) and install the .apk from there. It will be in your download folder. After that open the app it will have a button that says root and you tap it and your rooted. Then follow the threads below to get a recovery flashed, make a nandroid, and then flash a new rom(I would suggest asop's gingerbread rom, super fast and sexy). And lastly enjoy your new phone.

Here are some other threads where we have walked people through rooting and flashing. They will be very helpful from this point on.

Thank you for the quick response and help with this. I rooted my 1st gen iphone back in the day but doing it on the android phone makes me nervous. I dont want to brick it. I have read through a lot of the posts and have one other question. Will z4root work with build 2.32.651.2? I am on firmware 2.1-update1, baseband 2.42.02.10.29....

No problem at all. Definitely let me know if it works and if you have anymore questions. Once you get a good rom on your phone your not going to believe the speed difference.

Yeah, Z4Root will root any version of stock Android 2.1 with Sense UI for the Sprint HTC Hero. You can go ahead and use that even if you are fully updated to the latest version. :)

I prefer the methods of rooting that only require my handset to the PC based ones. I am not saying the PC based ones are bad, but that I just like doing everything directly from my Sprint HTC Hero. ;)

LBP...
So whats the link I go to from my hero to start rooting? Im very, very new at this, have been reading the threads for hours now, and I think I want to try going through just my phone...not my pc. Thanks in advance.

Lance go to my first post in this thread and download z4root from that link. Install via es file explorer or astro file manager from the market. Once installed open up z4root and its just one button to push and your rooted. Very easy.

Thanks again for all the help rb and LB as well as everyone else who keeps these forums up to date and helps out us non programmers understand how this all works. Rooting went perfectly and flashed gingerbread... now just putting my apps back on the phone and tweaking the settings...

I am glad to hear it all went well. I hope you enjoy your new ROM.

If you have any further questions, we are here to help. Cheers.

Use the .apk file from this post: http://androidforums.com/sprint-hero-all-things-root/317354-trying-root-but-issue.html#post2563627 .

You will have to download that to your microSD card via the browser on your handset. You can then install it using a file explorer like EStrongs File Explorer. After that, you just run it and choose permanent root. It might take a few minutes to work and if it freezes, just pull the battery and reboot and do it again.

God I'm impatient:D I've been following this thread and it FINALLY prompted me to take the plunge.... I got z4root dl'd, installed, and running. It seems to be stuck on the 'rebooting' screen, does it tend to hang at this point or am I frozen and need to do a battery pull?
EDIT: nevermind, pulled the battery and rebooted, checked the app tray and I had Superuser icon. I B Rooted! This forum rocks!
Now it's off to the market to get the Rom manager and CWM! I'm sur I'll be back with questions... threadjack/

We will be here, once you download Rom Manager simply flash the recovery, and then create a Nandroid back up, then you can flash a Rom of your choosing

Thanks DonB! I've got Rom Manager installed, flashed CWM recovery, and I have a Nandroid, now I just need to get to my desktop so I can transfer the new GB AOSP Rom to my SD card... again, being very impatient
Just so I'm clear (as if I didn't spend all day going through these threads) I will now drop the ROM zip onto the root of my SD card, load Rom Manager, reboot into Recovery, clear caches, and then click "Install ROM from SD Card" and let it do it's thang?

Yes, put both GB Rom and Gapps on the root of your SD card, now that you have your back up, you will boot into recovery, and you will do a full wipe, then you will install zip from CD card, install GB Rom first, let it do a full install, once done, simply back out and install from SD card again and then install the Gapps, once done, simply reboot, then sign in to Gmail, set your phone up and then, go to the market and download the Rom Manager again as you will not have that anymore because you did a full wipe. then once you have your phone set exactly as you like it, then boot back into recovery and create another Nandroid of your GB Rom for safe keeping, if you need anything else simply holla ;)

AAAAH!, I think I might have missed something...
"The application Setup Wizard (process com.android.setupwizrd) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
I hit Force close and it just keeps looping... what now?

Boot back into recovery, and flash the GB Rom and the3 Gapps again, and then report back

No, hit the back button, and then install the Gapps, and then hit the back button again and then reboot

ok, the screen still looks like the recovery screen, but it says Install from sdcard complete, do I reboot?

OK, then sign into Gmail, then set your phone up the way you like, once you have it like you want it, reboot back into recovery and then create a Nandroid back up for safe keeping.

rebooting now...

That seemed to do it! I'm setting up the Google items now... I'll report back once everything is set up, but it seems like everything is doing what it needs to

NP, I am here if you run into a problem

Getting everything set up again, the only issue that I'm running into is that Gmail keeps force closing... I rebooted and checked the market for updates and nada tostada.
