Trying to Root my Captivate

rclong

Lurker
I now have 3 Galaxy S's, the original, an S2, and the S3 is in the mail. I have always wanted to root the Captivate but was to chicken. I got this one on ebay and it has been fine, no problems until I tried to update it to Gingerbread.
I decided I would try and root it so that I could play with it and learn a little more. I have tried several Zip updates but they all stop and are unable to verify.

The phone is a model SGH-I897, running firmware 2.2, baseband I897UCJI6, Kernel 2.6.32.9 jetaek.lee@sep-11 #1,Build number FROYO.UCJI6.

I would like to root the phone and then try different roms as well as ICS if I could.
