Root "Tuning Up" Stock DInc Gingerbread?

Well, have browsed about the ICS ROMspace for this phone, and tried a few different ones, but there always seems to be something that doesn't quite work right, and which busts some essential function that I need for business (this is my company-owned cell). So, regrettably, I'm falling back on the stock GB ROM for a while...but may take the plunge again later.

In the meantime, I'm going to try Plan B. Does anyone have some suggestions as to how to spruce up the stock ROM to increase things like performance, display smoothness, battery life, etc.? Maybe a new radio, or kernel, or HBOOT, or what-have-you?
