Turn off automatic voice reading of text message?

I have a Droid X from Verizon. For the past few years, I had Verizon block text messages, but I recently reactivated it. (this was because people would send me a text message, but not get any sort of message back that it was not sent to me).

The problem is that the phone is reading the text messages aloud, and I can't figure out how to turn this off. I have an app called, "Quick Quiet" which turns off rings and notifications on a schedule, but it does not silence these text messages.

I have stumped Verizon technical support. I see no voice settings in the messaging app.

In the messaging settings, "Auto-retrieve MMS messages" was already off. So, I am puzzled why these messages are even coming in.

One forum suggested Settings/Call Settings/Caller ID Readout -set to "ring only," but it was already set that way.

Another user mentioned that this reading of text message started when they installed an app called Vlingo. But, I don't have that app.

Thank you in advance for any other ideas,

-Joe

Thanks for the top about safe mode. In safe mode, it did not read text messages. So, apparently I have an app issue. But, I only have one app that reads text, which was installed years ago. That is Smart Alarm, which I use daily.

So, aside from abandoning that app, my only other option seems to be blocking all text messages. I even checked to see if turning off "Automatically retrieve MMS messages", but that was already off. I don't like any of the options.

Thanks again for the suggestion, even if I don't like the implications.

you could reset the smart alarm app, by wiping apps data and cache, menu>settings>apps>installed>smart alarm

Thank you all for the replies. I finally found a successful solution.

The existing settings under the accessibility menu already had "Voice Readouts" turned off. But, it was suggested that I turn it on, and then back off. That did the trick.
