how do i turn call waiting off

It depends on the phone. On Samsung, for instance, you open the phone app, tap the menu, tap Call settings, tap Additional settings and you can turn call waiting on and off and you can enable call forwarding, so the second caller gets sent to another number. (The default is your voicemail number.)

It may be different with different manufacturers, but it will be similar.
