Turn off Notifications

I recently downloaded Meebo for chatting with friends. Problem I would like to solve is most likely easy. I would like to stop all notifications of chat messages completely. There are many chat programs, but I would like to turn off all notifications of any kind that display at the top left corner of my android device. Anyone know a way to do this?
 
There are many different notifications that can be displayed there. I don't think you can turn them off under a general setting. You would need to check the settings of each app individually to see if there is a toggle in there.
 
Yeah, maybe i need to find a chat program that stays in the background. It's really not cool when your wife picks up your phone and see's some chicks name at the top letting her know some other chick is sending me messages.... not a good day at home when this happens...
