Help Turn off screen without locking

Sorry if this has been answered before.

Is there a way to turn off screen without locking it? I really don't need to lock it when the phone is laying on the table but saving battery by turnig off screen is good.

As far as I am aware this is neither doable nor recommended. Simply put the battery life would drain extremely fast as the screen is energized when on in order to recognized user inputs.
