Turn screen backlight on when auto-dimmed?

Hi,

When the inactivity timeout has made the screen dim, is there any way to turn the backlight on again without any "side effects"?

I can press the menu button, but that will unnecessarily display the menu (if any). I can also tap the screen, but then I risk tapping on e.g. a link.

But what if I just want to turn the backlight on again without any such "side effects"? How do I do that!?

I think I know what you mean.

Set the phone up to have the screen/scroll lock on (Settings > Locations and Security > Screen Unlock Pattern, select it and follow the instructions). Once you have set up the screen lock just press the top on/off button on the phone once to illuminate the screen for a second to check it, then press the same button once again to turn the screen off again. This does not start any apps or enter menus, other start any other on-screen options, and it doesn't disable the screen lock either.
