Turning off apps that are running

I have a new toy, my Droid Razr H but coming from and iPhone, trying to learn a new system can be confusing. I noticed in the "Settings", under the apps, it lists apps that are running. If I don't use these app's may I turn them off? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well you can turn stuff of that isn't needed by the system. Though of course they may just start themselves back up.

Android is designed to use resources only when necessary so even if those apps are running in the background, they're not hogging your system. That's not the whole story, but you get some more info in this thread:

You can turn them off, but given the way Android works, it may have a negative effect on battery life. Unless you see them as draining battery in the battery use screen, they won't be have any real impact on battery and you're fine to leave them running.
