Turning off data on android.

Hi all, new to android and only smartphone we've ever had in house is one I-phone.

I am thinking of getting Samsung galaxy y for my daughter but wanted to check something first,

On my i-Phone even with data turned off it still eats away at my data allowance, the only way to stop it is to tell it a fake network name so it can't log on, this is a pain.

So my question is, will there be a way of stopping her phone from using data unless she wants it to without doing loads of moves in settings?

Someone mentioned installing an app that meant you could just turn it on off in one click, does anyone know what that is and if it works. If this a problem on all smartphones then I'm afraid she won't be getting one.

If I install the app for easy switching off on on of data, will the sneaky apps still use data? Have had to install an apn app to stop them on I-phone, would I have to do the same on galaxy y?

Android has widgets that you can place in the homescreen. One if the options is a switch that turns on or off your mobile data. When this is off data will not be used.

You can also turn off background data so apps can only use it while in use.

Well, as far as I can tell on my sister's Android, it doesn't do sneak data. It doesn't show in the bill breakdown.

That's good. I accidentally left my i-phone on last night and although the data was off it still used up data, that's why I have an app that changes the apn to stop it. Was concerned that this was a smartphone in general issue, but hopefully it's just a IOS one. :)

Nope, just an apple issue then. You can completely stop data

On a side note, I got a couple of friends with data off on their iPhones and it doesn't use data. Maybe you mistook a setting?

Maybe, but things like weather seem to do what they want and log on even with it turned off. Am running a couple of experiments now.:)

I have HD Widgets installed and I have the widget called "data enabled" on my screen. This is always switched off. I never let data run on its own. If I am in a situation where I need my data, I simply switch the widget on and then off again once I no longer need it. If you cant have full control over your data charges on an iphone that is just sad. This will not be a problem on android.

Thanks, we got a Galaxy Ace in the end and have installed Data Enabler on it.:):):):)

I have a Samsung Galaxy 2S and I have an option to check (or UNcheck) to turn Data on or off. Easy peasy. You might also just put it in Flight Mode and that may do the trick.
