Turning off Predictive Text whilst Keeping Spell Check?

I think it's safe to say that predictive text is one of the most thoroughly annoying features on Android SMS. As far as I can tell, spell check is 'embedded' in predictive text and thus cannot be on while predictive text is off. Is there a way around this? Any other SMS app that specifically addresses this?

PS. On Galaxy S3

Exact method depends on what keyboard you are using. Just turn off auto-replace in the settings but leave auto-suggest on.

I hate auto correct as well. I use a third party keyboard on my SGS3 called Thumb Keyboard. It lets you turn off auto-correct while still keeping the suggested words. As you type, there is a line above your keyboard that lists suggested words. You can simply tap the word or just keep typing.

There is no feature that highlights words that are not in the dictionary after the fact. If you mistype and then continue onto the next word, there is no indication that it may be incorrect.
