Tutorial/app recs for 63 yr old

ozone

Lurker
Hi, I'm new here - been lurking and reading some threads - appreciate the forum. I have used an android phone for more than two years (started with G1) but am still a relative novice. I do like them a lot however

However, my post is not about me; it's about my mother, who is 63 and not particularly technically inclined, lives across the country from me, and just got her first android phone. She doesn't want to be a dinosaur and wants to keep up...and is doing the best she can

I wondered if anyone had recommendations for extremely basic tutorials on android, using an android phone. Video tutorials might be better than text for her.

Also I realize apps discussion takes place in another forum, but any recs for apps for a 63 yr old woman would be welcome as well.

Thanks

well well well......

I have to say I am impressed. For a 63 yrs old your mom is damn .... well, geeky. In a good way I mean.

But damn. I am stumped. What does she intend to use it for anyway (apart from just calling ppl I mean), and which phone is this?

I am little worried about her eye sight as well. Android phones tend to have tiny characters. Will she have trouble with it? My mom's only 40 something, but she's already having problem reading some of the smaller character on her Nokia phone.

You should be able to fine any tutorial videos you need on youtube. Just search for the name of your phone with the word "tutorial".

And while we are at it, why not introduce her to some basic games to motivate her even more? Angry bird shouldn't be too difficult, and it's free.

Which phone did she get? After the basics of long press vs. tap and what the menu buttons do, Her experience will be very dependent on the UI. Sense, TouchWiz, Motoblur, etc. The manufacturers have tutorials on their sites for each interface.

hell.. why did you not get her an iphone!!!!!!!!!!!! epic fail on your part!

jk... had to... :)

that is a great question.. dont really have an answer. other than the youtube direction.
hope you suggested a phone with bigger screen... for her eyes and easier to use.

You might suggest she down the phandroid app to surf here. set it up so she can read about her particular phone... and how to search it.
show her how to post here for help... we will help take care of her with you. :D

get her tapatalk app.. and show her forums for her favorite hobbies... she will love it.. and learn while chatting to friends.

Usually the carrier websites have video tutorials. I only know about TMo since that's who I have, but maybe you could search her carrier site.

My dad is about 60 and got his first android phone about a month ago. He is somewhat technically inclined but still gots some things to learn. Oh and hes too hard headed to listen lol. He was using older ghetto ones for years up till now. But if she is a good listener then a bit of an explanation won't hurt much. My aunt's got their first real computer after living in the stone age for years, and they just got real internet too after being stuck on dialup. It took them about 5-10 minutes to figure out how to open internet exploder. So anyway some people can listen better than others but unlike my relatives that I am talking about they spent most of their time living out in the country out in the sticks.

Instead of a smartphone, why not a tablet. Its bigger and almost as fun.
The Galaxy Tab is one I would recommend since it basically available on all the carriers (price varies though), it allows you to call and allows you to use the market (after adding the hacks).

If that is too big, then I would suggest any of the following...
On Sprint
The EVO 4G (big screen, slender and oh so fine.) Personal bias here.

On Verizon
Droids Incredible,
Droid X
Samsung Fascinate

On T-Mobile
Samsung Vibrant
myTouch 4G

On AT&T
Samsung Captivate
HTC Aria

On MetroPCS
Samsung Craft
