After doing hours of research, I figured out how to get rooted on a stock Sprint Galaxy S5 (with Android 6.0.1). I made step-by-step instructions and posted them over at XDA. I hope it helps save others from doing the hours of research and eases any apprehension about trying to root. I don't want to maintain a 2nd version of the same tutorial here so I'm just posting the link to XDA.
