hello all, first time post here. thanks for any help.
i'll admit it - i'm a bit of an android n00b. great computer skills, but its all been with micro$haft for the most part dating back to the monochrome IMB desktops.
finally got myself an android phone (HTC M8) this past spring and so far i really like it. its my first smartphone. now its time for me up upgrade my TV setup....i have a 32" tube! it doesn't get used for obvious reasons. i've tried searching google for information, but most of what i find is very outdated or just doesn't apply to what i'm after.
so to cut to the chase here's what i'm looking for:
have all my media on an external drive attached to my win7 64-bit desktop. its shared on my home network and works fine, i have wake on lan setup so i can start my computer up from my phone remotely. next, i would like to get a new LCD TV and attach an android media box to it. i will need to be able to access my network media over wireless (router is a d-link DGL-5500, AC wireless.) and play on the TV. in addition, i would like to get the android NES and SNES emulator apps so i can also play some oldschool games on the TV. i have two logitech USB gamepads to use for this. hopefully the roms will be stored over network as well.
first problem: what box to get? there's a lot now some better than others. i don't mind spending the money for a good one. some of the minix boxes appear to be good, but i just don't have the knowledge here. 4K support might be a good idea just for the elusive 'future proofing'...for what little thats worth!
second problem: beating my head against the wall for TVs. again, lack of knowledge. most of the info i find can be misleading. i figure around 40-50" range, LED backlit (i think they all are now?), and a true 120Hz would be nice. 4K again might be a worthwhile investment. mainly looking at samsung or possibly LG.
third problem: not sure how to set this vision of mine up....i can see the networking being a pain. from what little i know, XBMC seems to be a good route?
again, just having trouble finding the info. going with a small android box seems to be a great cost savings route over building a small HTPC that will take up more space in the living room anyways.
thanks again guys, have mercy on the n00b!
P.S. i live in canada so some items i might not be able to get reasonably.
