Apps Two questions about checkbox

I'm a beginner and trying to learn.

When creating a checklist, tutorials and the like use a second layout with a checkbox and text field. Why don't they just use the text part of the checkbox itself?

Is there anyway to make the checkbox larger? I'd prefer a much larger checkbox that an older person can easily see.

None in particular. I read a book on Android Studio programming, and now am trying a project without instructions of what to do. A few of these and i might be able to claim i know what i am doing. Anyway, i've been searching google for how to make a checklist, and those were the examples that i found.
