Help Two Removable Disks When I Connect to PC?

Howdy all,

So I'm scratching my head here. Recently acquired the Epic 4G Touch and love it for the most part (except for that pesky camera sound for which I had to root the phone to nuke it).

My SD card is full, though and so I had to plug it in and clean it out. First thing I noticed is that I have two sources of storage and I don't really understand what they are or how they differ, more importantly:
  • USB Storage
  • SD Card

Both have the same amount of memory (about 7.4 gb), although they each have differing free memory.

Further, they seem to have similar directories in them. I'm wondering why this is since I thought I only had one SD card. For example, they both have a DCIM folder but only one has actual pics in it.

Could this have anything to do with the fact that the card originally came from my previous phone (EVO 3G)?

Sure would like some guidance on this. I'm kind of surprised I ran out of memory on this card so fast so I'm wondering if I maybe did something wrong swtiching from the EVO to this phone, or something.

The Epic Touch has an internal SD card, which mounts as a removable disk. The other disk is your standard SD card.

Android will set up the same folders for the most part. If your SD that you put in the 4g touch was previously used on your previous android phone, you will see very similar folders, and ultimately get lost between the two. You could also be running a backup program that is duplicating the internal storage, to your SD card.

On my computer, I found out which external drive was which, and named them "In_SD_CARD" and "EX_SD_CARD". The most sure fire way to find out which is which is to plug in the phone to the computer with the SD card removed. Then label the drive that shows up as the internal card. Hope that helps.

i was curious too. open both up on your pc, right click and look at properties. my sd card had 100% free space, so mine turned out to be (H), not (G).

The way you are describing this, you need to have USB debugging turned on before you see the two directories on your computer when you plug it in (menu/settings/applications/development/USB debugging). These drives are mounted and you will need to click on safely remove hardware before disconnecting the phone or you may loose data.

If you leave USB debugging off and plug your phone into your PC, then you will see SPH-D710 mobile phone in "my computer", and when you click on that, you will see "card" and "phone". Pretty clear which is which (you need to have the Samsung drivers installed on your PC first, which you can get by installing Kies.) This is called MTP-Connected mode and you do not need to click on safely remove hardware before disconnecting. Some directories will be the same but the phone should have more directories than the card.
